Have any church groups gone after the Viagra type TV advertisments?
Edited on Tue Mar-07-06 12:00 PM by gatorboy
Considering the outright attack on women's rights and trying to keep them "In Their Place", I was wondering if anyone has heard about any of these religious groups going after the "hard-on pills" TV/Radio spots. I can't switch a channel without finding a few of these spots on each day. But I haven't heard a peep about anyone in the Christian Right upset about these overly sexual products (For men of course).

2. Why would they
It seems okay for men to have perpetual hardons through chemical means, but women have no rights over their own bodies.

7. Mommy & Daddy , whats an erection??
is a question a number of parents have to answer after one of these ads is run. I have noticed the lack of interest in going after these ads by the fundies. These same ads were running during the superbowl when Janet Jackson had her wardrobe malfunction. The fundies started a letter campaign to the FCC & now there is no 'live' TV. Everything is tape-delayed. Religious wackos are a tool that is used by the folks in charge.

8. Nope...
and they never complain about the sex on daytime TV either--these groups are smart, they only complain about things that are NOT likely to be consumed by their own 'brethren'...

It's about the money and power--there is NO religion or morality involved.

10. Their usual argument
Typically, groups seeking to curtail women's rights in this regard argue that viagra is a medication to treat a psychological and physiological defect, whereas birth control pills are purely elective medication. I expect that they'd also point out that they don't protest commercials for tampons.

It's like the difference between surgery for breast augmentation and surgery to remove one's appendix. Or so they claim.

Of course, that argument is obvious bullshit, but it's their most common line of defense when explaining why they don't protest Viagra-type advertisements.

12. Please, no attacks on the sacred conduit to the gods
Viagra is holy - for it aids the sacred conduit reach it's full potential.

birth control is evil - it stops the sacred conduit from fulfilling it's holy mission....but Viagra is sanctified by the gods.

The Divine Rod of the Sacred Conduit must be held in the proper respect.

Wombs are mere vassals. They are in the service of the Divine Rod of the Sacred Conduit.

15. But of course! They're on a mission from God
So it's OK for them to use Viagra, sex toys, visit strip clubs, hire a prostitute and decide a woman's fate for her.

True story

I once saw a surgery where the testicle was removed....the doctor made an incision and pulled the actual testicle out...and it really did look like a very small brain. I died laughing.

19. But what if God's Plan is for old geezers not to be getting boners?
Oh the humanity of it all! Cue some Tull on the soundtrack:

When I was young and they packed me off to school
and taught me how not to play the game,
I didn't mind if they groomed me for success,
or if they said that I was a fool.
So I left there in the morning
with their God tucked underneath my arm
their half-assed smiles and the book of rules.
So I asked this God a question
and by way of firm reply,
He said - I'm not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays.
So to my old headmaster (and to anyone who cares):
before I'm through I'd like to say my prayers
I don't believe you:
you had the whole damn thing all wrong
He's not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays.
Well you can excomunicate me on my way to Sunday school
and have all the bishops harmonize these lines
how do you dare tell me that I'm my Father's son
when that was just an accident of Birth.
I'd rather look around me - compose a better song
`cos that's the honest measure of my worth.
In your pomp and all your glory you're a poorer man than me,
as you lick the boots of death born out of fear.
I don't believe you:
you had the whole damn thing all wrong
He's not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays.

18. Viagra isn't a bad thing...
After all, it was only after insurance companies started paying for Viagra prescriptions that their hyprocrisy came to light and they were also forced to start paying for birth control prescriptions.

21. I actually agree - viagra isn't bad - the hypocrisy is
the double-standard is and the sexism is

but Viagra is a quality of life medicine

impotence is real and it is debilitating for men and their relationships.

22. What, and acknowledge it's okay for men to have unfettered sex?
For pleasure, not procreation? Dude...what universe do you live in? Patriarcy will never do anything to interfere with the sexual pleasure, gratification or fulfilment of men. Even at the cost of women's lives and health. That's what Patriarchy is designed to protect, before anything else.

23. Yes. It's under sub-section 1.3.666 of Brett's Bible
If you listened to the Decency in Media hearings a couple of month's back, commercials were briefly touched on. Focus on the Family and another "Family" group talked about the sexually explicit and offensive beer commercials while watching football with their children. :eyes: The CBS exec at the table said even commercials are screened, turned down, and only aired during age appropriate times. He challenged them to give him a call when one of these 'offensive' commercials aired (said he's easy to reach!).

I didn't check to see if Brett Bozell published the CBS exec's cell phone on his website.
