You know?? I love Keith O, BUT. I am SICK of him wasting 1/2 |
|
Edited on Wed Mar-08-06 08:57 PM by SoCalDem
of the ONLY hour of truth we get....on SPORTS...YUK!! There are at least 3 Brazillion other places to hear about sports.. I KNOW he's primarily a "sports guy", but between "Keeping Tabs"(boring)..and the weird news segment and now 1/2 hr of the daily sports drama, he's not reporting on much of anything these days :grr:

1. It's where he came from... cut him slack |
|
I don't like sports at all, and sortof tune out when KO goes into it.. but I realize that was his first love, so let him have it. Maybe it will pull more nascar dads toward his other self.

3. Well, I'm glad it's not the lead-in story... seems like his line up |
|
works like this: about 15 minutes of serious news, 15 minutes of odd stuff and trivia, some murder story that his boss makes him do and something else entertainment or fluff related.
I LIKE to hear the sports stuff, I hope Bonds gets kicked out.

Since I was out last night I taped KO. When I watched this morning I fast forwarded through all the sports stuff. Tonight I just ignored most of it on in the background.

10. I like the way he structures his newscast |
|
It's nice to have news stories that are generally lighthearted after a bunch of serious stuff.

13. Whatever the topic, Olbermann is always centered and ethical. |
|
I appreciate seeing that even though I'm not so much into sports either. It's not just sports with Olbermann, it's often about ethics and values in sports. And the animal stuff, that's just human interest, it's funny. It takes the ominous pressure off the hard stuff. And these days, the news from this administration is ominous. Most people can't take much of that. That's why they don't know what's going on. Keith helps with that.

6. Forty percent of Americans don't watch sports on television |
|
Edited on Wed Mar-08-06 09:03 PM by IanDB1
Only 28% of Americans say they would pay to watch ESPN on cable as an ala carte option.
However, we need to attract the sports-watching NASCAR demographic in to watch Keith's show and get the rest of our message.
We've already pretty much got the Trekkers and Renaissance Faire demographic all sewed-up.

18. That means 60% do watch sports on TV |
|
It's hard to think of another hobby that 60% of Americans regularly take part in.
I love KO's sport's takes. He's one of the smartest sports guys I've ever heard. KO and Dan Patrick on ESPN radio is great (especially when they bash Bill O'Falafel).

8. It's not a "waste". It is effective, quite watchable news. |
|
He makes it an interesting program for more kinds of people. It is viewer friendly. He doesn't hit you over the head with ideology, just the facts, ma'am. It's a good approach, especially for guys, the politically neutral or the politically unaware. I like him, I like the approach. We need more of that.

11. Agree...and I find he donates only about 5 minutes to Dem Politics and |
|
since I long ago gave up Professional Sports watching (being sick of drugs, rapes, steroids and hype) I find that I just can't GET WITH the DU contingent of Olbermann fans.
I guess I'm just a curmudgeon...and not having TIVO I can't fast forward to that "Magical Olbermann DEM Soundbyte" that makes watching all of it worthwhile.
I must be getting old....:-(

WTF is going on with the o'reilly thing? Has the big giant head said anything? Has Keith named him Worst Person in the world? Have they carted falafel boy off in a straight jacket? Inquiring minds want to know.

15. No O'Reilly news this week. Sorry. :-) |
|
And for those who can't watch him just for "5 minutes of Dem news," well, he's not there for the Dems. He's there to cover the news. It's a news program, not a show about Dems. But he does show plenty of coverage of Republicans doing stupid unethical things--and makes a point of showing it, too. You'd think that alone would be reason for some people to watch.
As for the emphasis on sports this week, it's to be expected. A well-known baseball Hall of Famer just died very young, and another possible future Hall of Famer has been supposedly revealed to have drugged himself up like a prize steer on a non-organic ranch. So it's really rather big news. Combine that with the fact that KO's at spring training this week anyway and what you get is a lot of sports news. Much of it focused on ethics in sports...and if we can't have ethics in sports, where CAN we have it?
Hey, I'm just glad KO's doing Countdown this week at all. He could have just taken a week off and gone to Florida and left us with a substitute anchor. Instead, he's going the extra mile to broadcast from Tampa and do a working vacation. Kudos to him.

17. He's an ex-major league baseball player and VERY respected sports |

commentator. It's also why he's in FLA right now; reporting on spring training for ESPN.
He loves sports--that's why he is so completely disgusted with the corruption, criminality, and stupidity that has begun to reign over his beloved baseball.
I'll take wherever I can get unbiased, honest-to-goodness JOURNALISM; but I respect your opinion.

20. His show is not intended |
|
to be a full and complete round-up of the news. He does mostly the stories he wants to and some, according to him, his producers force him to do.
I'm not much of a sports person myself, but I respect his sports stories because he doesn't just fall down in awe at anyone. And he was magnificent last week in his support of Buck O'Neil, whose non-election to the Baseball Hall of Fame goes beyond appalling.
He did do the Worst Person in the World tonight. But during the worst of Hurricane Katrina he cut out all his frivolous stuff. He was absolutely magnificent. He also listens to what people say to him, and asks genuine follow-up questions.
