Jews
Superfucks: Krystol, Pipes, Pearle, Wolfie, Wiener/Savage, Horowitz..........

Superheros: Boxer, Feingold, Chomsky, Wellstone, Rhodes, Krugman..........

I find it interesting that there are such strong voices within the "Jewish Community" that are on opposite sides. Not that there are not other groups that resemble this difference, but Jews are a small percentage of the population. That's all.

Of course, I'm seeing it from an outsider's perspective, since I'm only half-Jewish, and the "wrong" half at that. ;-)

5. Sorry,
but there's no such thing as "half-Jewish." If your father is Jewish, all that means is that your father is Jewish. You're not.

It's a matriarchal descendant religion, and if your mother isn't Jewish, you're not.

It's also not an ethnicity like Hungarian or Flemish. It's a religion. Like no one is half-Baptist or half-Presbyterian.

18. Again,
you're confusing a religion - Judaism - with an ethnicity - German, Hungarian, Irish, etc.

Your mother was not one-quarter Jewish. She may have had a Jewish forefather, but if her mother wasn't Jewish, your mother wasn't Jewish. And that means you're not Jewish - at all.

There is no such thing as "part Jewish." That's like being "part atheist, part Baptist." Judaism is a religion, not a country.

You're either a Jew, or you're not.

See?

Yeah, it's a creepy post, isn't it?

Back in Russia, they would put a "jewish" stamp in your passport. And I assure you, they weren't talking about religion.
And back in Nazi Germany, being a part Jewish would get you killed, no matter your religion. Who are you to tell people they are not Jewish?

SWMBO was suggested as an ID by the only person to whom it applies - The Magistrate. And he does obey me. When he feels like it.

I too am uncomfortable to see the friend-or-foe sorting of a group that is so often attacked. It's not good to compare, say, Wolfowitz and Wellstone because they share one commonality. I mean, Rush Limbaugh and I are both fat but I would be really pissed off if someone tried to draw any other comparisons.

OTOH, Al Franken would be really pissed off that he hasn't been mentioned yet as a superhero.

Judaism is a religion, nothing more. If one ceases to believe in and practice that religion, then one is no longer a member of it.

I wrote about this here, and I occasionally get e-mails from other ex-Jews expressing relief that others feel the same way.

41. I can buy that, but one thing I don't understand
is how a genetic disease like Tay-Sachs can be identified as a primarily Jewish genetic disease (like Sickle Cell anemia in blacks), if Jewish is not genetic. For example:

RECESSIVE DISEASES SUCH AS Tay-Sachs often occur more frequently, though not exclusively, in a defined population. A person's chances of being a TSD carrier are significantly higher if he or she is of eastern European (Ashkenazi) Jewish descent. Approximately one in every 27 Jews in the United States is a carrier of the TSD gene. This is from the National Tay-Sachs & Allied Diseases Association, http://www.ntsad.org/ .

I am not disagreeing, because I don't know enough about the issue to disagree. I am just curious.

"Who is a Jew? (Hebrew: ?מיהו יהודי) is the name of the religious, social and political debate on the exact definition of which persons can be called Jewish. As Judaism shares some of the characteristics of a nation, a religion, an ethnicity, and a culture, the definition of who is a Jew may vary, depending on whether a religious, sociological, or national approach to identity is used. "Who is a Jew?" has also become a well-known rhetorical question within Judaism, referring to a cultural and religious battle to define who can be described as truly being a "Jew" and what the "correct" definition for being "Jewish" actually is."

45. Generations of intermarriage...
Edited on Sun Mar-12-06 02:13 AM by Spider Jerusalem
within a relatively closed society lead to greater expression of otherwise recessive genetic abnormalities (see for instance the incidence of genetic disorders among the Amish). Jews, for millenia, married primarily within their own communities, there being a stigma attached to marriages between Jew and gentile thanks to Christian persecution and ostracism of Jews, and conversely thanks to Jewish efforts to maintain the Jewish character of their society in the face of the aforementioned persecution and ostracism; intermarriage was VERY infrequent, as both parties would be rendered pariahs in their respective communities.

In Eastern Europe, the primary unit of Jewish society was the shtetl...a small village, where there was much intermarriage in family lines extending back many generations, but there was ALSO some limited amount of exogamy (marriages being contracted in the next village over, etc). So through this limited exogamy, recessive genetic traits spread among the Jewish population of Eastern Europe, BUT the greater tendency to intermarriage among these populations made the chance of two carriers of a recessive gene marrying (and thus having offspring with a particular genetic disorder) much greater.

I'm a lapsed Catholic/agnostic/dunno but I find the Jewish religion fascinating, and have ever since I was a kid and read Leon Uris' "Exodus" (6th grade required reading in my Catholic school) and Michener's "The Source".

The Jewish population here in Alaska is very small but my husband's coworker from California is Jewish, and there's times when my husband feels he is on shaky ground because he knows so little about the religion. We're both trying to learn more.

42. Perhaps...
Edited on Sun Mar-12-06 02:07 AM by Behind the Aegis
...the reason that Jews have such a strong voice is because when we are silent we die! I cannot agree with those on the "superfuck" list on most occasions, but I do know that we are tied to together by our religion. Like any group, we have our 'good guys' and 'bad guys.' We also have our share of traitors and opportunists.

Perhaps the better question is, why are people so interested in pointing out the number of Jews that are neo-cons, but often say nothing about the other Jews who do good work? To me, this smacks of pointing out the number of criminals who happen to be African-American, as if it is an indicator to the predilection of AAs. Although this post does point out the "good" Jews, to me that is also some what problematic.

I am not really sure what your point was and I know that you are also Jewish, but this post has a very creepy feel too it.
