"Indestructible" leftist challenges Mexico's big two

By Noel Randewich

ECATEPEC, Mexico (Reuters) - The leftist candidate leading Mexico's presidential race on Sunday brushed off growing criticism that he is a populist ally of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, saying he was "politically indestructible."

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who leads opinion polls by up to 9 percentage points, responded to his rivals' criticism as his party took on the ruling establishment in a local election in the country's most populous state.

President Vicente's Fox's conservative party accused Lopez Obrador on Friday of illegally receiving aid from U.S. foe Chavez. The leftist's party strongly denies that.

Former Mexican President Carlos Salinas warned against populism, in an apparent attack on the left-wing candidate.

3. Let me see what the options are, either we support Fox who has
resolved his country's problems by cutting a deal with Bush to allow all the illegal immigration, or we support a Leftist who might actually look for solutions to Mexico's problems within Mexico itself. This is a toughie.

Mexican presidential candidate details border security plan

NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico — Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the early favorite to become the next president of Mexico, said he would "clean up" every agency from the department of justice to the smallest municipal police forces as part of his plan to defeat the drug cartels that have turned some parts of the border into war zones.

He also said illegal immigration is the key issue to work on together with the United States.

Lopez Obrador chose a speech Sunday in Nuevo Laredo, the epicenter of the violence, to unveil his border security plan.

The candidate for the Democratic Revolution Party, or PRD, favors a wide approach to quell the violence that would put as much emphasis on social programs to keep youth away from cartel recruiters as on law enforcement.

I don't think its all rhetoric either. He dislikes seeing his countrymen leaving Mexico and believes without the rampant corruption there now they would not leave. I have my fingers crossed for this guy and his ideas.

8. Damn. You tell Lou Dobbs this and Lou Dobbs will give him the
publicity he needs to win with the Mexican absentee vote. (Assuming they have one and their elections are more honest than ours.)

Obrador. I believe that means Laborer.

7. That's one real advantage to having the US military
totally bogged down in the mideast in two different wars. We don't have enough manpower to go charging in when the rich people start to scream "communism!!!" at common sense and badly needed reforms. What we are seeing is a long denied need for these country to institute democratic reform.

I hope Mexico does swing left. I hope they can figure a way how to distribute the great wealth of that country. I love that country, it's people, its music, its cuisine, its color. I certainly wish them well.
