Poll question: Rate these Radio Personalities!
Edited on Sun Mar-12-06 11:21 PM by Nutmegger
This thread was inspiried by the Big Eddie thread floating around in GD.

This is a hard choice for me. If I had to choose, I'd go with Malloy because his constant screaming is cathartic.

Feel free to add others that are not listed!

1. Thom... All the way.
He doesn't have to make stuff up. He tells it like it is without guesswork or extrapolation. The man's a gem.

8. Thom is by far the best...
Super intelligent and deadly accurate, he hits the bulls eye over and over.

Runoff votes would go to Stephie Miller and then to Rachael Maddow.

27. Tony Kornheiser?
I haven't heard that guy since I left Maryland 8 years ago. Is he still doing that show with Michael Wilbon?

Tony's funny, but his disdain for sports outside of the Big 4 drove me nuts. I became a huge DC United fan when the MLS began and all he did was trash soccer, when he bothered to mention it at all. He could go on for hours about Heath Shuler though....

What's he doing these days?

We can't win elections without those moderates, and those repubs turned Dems, or the Independents. Ed really appeals to them. He's interesting to listen to.

17. No fair putting Sam and Janeane in one choice.
Sam Seder is fantastic on his own. When Janeane shows up, I often end up moving to my next podcast. Funny that the guy they brought in as the sidekick turns out to be the one with real radio talent and insight.

I actually prefer Majority Report without Janeane, Sam is so much better on his own.

That aside, my actual favorite is Malloy.

19. Too tough to pick just one
Rachel Maddow (!!!!!!!!!)
Al Franken
Ring of Fire
Sam Sedar
Peter Werbe and Thom Hartman are also both excellent too.

I used to enjoy a more ranting approach but it really wears on me. I sometimes feel like the host is yelling at ME, which is ironic when I believe pretty much the same things they believe. I don't enjoy being harrangued, when there is a deeper and more thoughtful approach available (with plenty of anger too, don't get me wrong... don't mistake anger and 'loudness'.)

Nowadays I like hosts who keep it factual, who have good guests & interviews, and who have good smart insights.

I dislike personal chit-chat, being yelled at, and bad comedy bits (especially songs).

Just a PSA: She'll be filling in for Malloy on the 14th (Tuesday).

22. Malloy is my favorite by far
He feels my rage. And he plays the best music. I think he has the best rapport with his audience. His show is the perfect nightcap. And his wife, Kathy, is very cool too.

Randi is my second favorite, I love the way she debates the right-wingers. Her research is solid and her mind is sharp, but she has a tendency to talk over her liberal callers who are simply trying to make a point.

Hartmann is my third favorite, I love the way he puts everything into historical context. The man is a genius. Unfortunately, I only get to hear him when he is filling in for the Majority Report, as his show is not broadcast down here.

I listen to Schultz sometimes and find myself agreeing with him sometimes, disagreering with him other times, and getting annoyed with his voice after 30 minutes, not to mention his love for Hillary.

Franken's voice annoys me within 10 minutes. And I don't find his jokes that funny.

Sam Seder makes some good points, but he is too high-strung, so he annoys me as well after a while. He comes on after Malloy down here, at 1 a.m., so the last thing I need to hear is somebody who sounds as if they had five shots of espresso before going on the air. And I think he needs a new line because "surprise, surprise" is getting old.

Janeane Garafalo also annoys me. She reminds me of the girl who is always picking for a fight, even if it's over some bullshit issue. I think she hates men.

I can't take Jerry Springer take seriously after all those years of the Jerry Springer Show.

Laura Flanders' accent gets annoying after a while.

Even though some of them annoy me, I'm still happy they're on the air, spreading the liberal message in their own way.

24. Tough choice between Ed & Thom.
Both are my faves... Thom is just so calm and informed and intellectually intersting. Ed.. Big Ed.. he's such a trip. We NEED him desperately if we have any chance of getting power back. He is a magnet for moderates (who we really need), and he's winning over lots and lots of republicans who are sick of Bush's bullshit but can't embrace the more traditional liberals. Ed's delivery and his no-nonsense style really appeals to a lot of people. I think Thom and Ed are good in a back to back lineup on AAR. Too many people here diss Ed because they think he's not "liberal enough", like theres' some litmus test for it. He's a good old boy, and we need that. If you can remember back when we had the last good president, Clinton, well it's the same appeal.

28. You forgot Marc Maron!
He and his sidekick Jim Earl on AAR are hilarious and nobody rants quite like him.

Mike Malloy = angry rant (cathartic)
Marc Maron = funny angry rant (priceless)

Jim Earl's "The War On Brains" and "Rapture Watch" alone are worth listening to the whole two hours

31. Why so hard on Sam Seder?
Here's my opinion for what it's worth :scared: :

Sam is witty and knowledgeable, he does interviews very well. Sam really engages people.

I even like Janeanne Garofolo, although she is hopeless when she has to interview someone alone.

I like Mike Malloy but I do find he gets boring after a while because he basically screams all night.

Randi Rhodes is witty but cuts off her callers even when they agree with her.

Al Franken is dopey but he interviews interesting people.

On another note, I have only begun listening to domestic American radio in the past year and I have been an expatriate for decades so I have completely missed much of contemporary popular American culture for over 25 years. Someone tell me who is this Bill O'Reilly guy and why does anyone in the world take him seriously? He is a boob.

33. Sam, like a couple of the Young Turks,

cannot logically complete a sentence.

Further, he thinks his theatrical screaming provides an answer.

Thirdly he does not practice what he preaches - as my quoted example.

That is not an isolated incident.

His handling of callers is not all that good.

Further, the ratings are based on about 30 different points and he fails on many of them.

And there are many great Liberal Talk Show Hosts compared to Sam!

But he is infinitely better than Al Franken, who has never been rated by me. So do take some comfort in that! :-)

35. I'd have to go w/ Bob Kincaid
He is on @ a horrible time for the left coast so I usually get him on White Rose Archives the next day. He broadcasts from West Virginia; his coverage of the Sago mine disaster was amazing. I felt like I was back in Appalachia. Malloy is #1, Kincaid is #2.
