<snip>
Today I will introduce a Senate resolution censuring the President.

The facts and the case for censure are clear. The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, makes it a crime to wiretap American citizens without a court warrant - which is what the President has admitted doing. Before the program was revealed, he also misled Congress and the American people about the wiretapping that was being done. For example, at a 2004 speech in Buffalo, he said, "Any time you hear the United States government talking about wiretap, it requires, a wiretap requires a court order." And at a 2004 speech in my home state of Wisconsin, he said that "the government can't move on wiretaps or roving wiretaps without getting a court order."

When the domestic spying story first broke, the President went from saying he wouldn't be able to talk about it, to suggesting there was no other way to wiretap terrorists, to implying that the FISA law is out of date. He went on to claim that sweeping inherent powers of the presidency or the authorization of force back in 2001 gave him such authority -- neither of which is legally or factually correct. While the President has cherry-picked information before, he cannot do the same with the laws of our land.

Censuring the President is not something that should be taken lightly. But the President has BROKEN the law and there needs to be action and accountability.

1. No wonder Kos was down for awhile. This is big and Feingold has a
tremendous amount of courage and you can see by the 99% of Dems who voted for the Patriot Act.

6. If Kerry is on board then the PTB (Powers That Be) must be hanging Bushco
out to dry. But the coming Impeachment will also disguise their next moves.

Oy...I have a headache.

4. Anybody else remember the proposal to censure Clinton?
But no. Nothing less than impeachment was acceptable to the insatiable GOP.

Not to undermine Feingold's idea. Just reminescing...

8. Censure is the beginning of the Impeachment Inquiry process
I don't know why Russ' press release and comments on the Censure were down. The history of Censure, separate documents loaded okay and Kos said they were having problems, then read DU's Latest Breaking question on whether Kos was down.

11. I don't remember that
I just remember the impeachment.

They are not afraid to scream and yell and get ugly. Why are we.

They puff themselves up with their false indignation and rail before anyone with a camera. Why don't we?

9. Be sure to thank him...Someone posted after Russ' brave and solitary stand
except for Leahy and Jeffords voted alone against the Patriot Act without his amendments to protect civil liberties an Feingold's attempt to hold a single Senator filibuster against the Patriot (Enabling) Act -- that they had called Feingold's office and the staff told them when they asked that there had been very few phone calls of support for Russ. Sad.

12. I called both of my Senators asking them to support Feingold's resolution
It's going to be interesting. I know that Smith (repuke)won't vote for censure, but Wyden is fairly progressive and may do the right thing.

that way, they can't say that they haven't heard from anyone from their home states.

Please do.
