Ohio Doctor: Women can't get pregnant during a rape. WTF?????
Edited on Mon Mar-13-06 01:11 PM by KyndCulture
--snip

"I think that life begins when the chromosomes of the sperm and egg line up," said Dr. Richard Dobbins, who works in the emergency department at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Kenton.

Dobbins also questioned the need for emergency contraception in rape cases, saying that most women either are not fertile during assault or do not become pregnant because the trauma prompts a hormonal response that prevents ovulation.

"So if they do get pregnant, they wanted it, is that it?" a reproductive-rights advocate in the audience asked.

Sure, if the the woman gets pregnant, she clearly "wanted" it (and if a rightwing-whacko doctor says it, it must be true.)

But when the politically monikered Roe V. Wade For Men gains any traction, then not only will the voluntarily impregated woman be unable to exercise her reproductive rights; the obviously-not-a-rapist man will be able to sever all financial and social ties to the resulting child (a child which the woman, I remind you, must clearly have wanted).

Folks, we live in a golden age.

13. Technically true but also full of shit and he knows it.
It is true that extreme trauma can cause a hormonal shift, and that shift can make it slightly less likely to become pregnant. However, it doesn't "prevent ovulation" by any stretch of the imagination. Which means he is either completely uneducated on the topic, or else he knows how it really works and is exagerating and lying to make it sound like something it's not.

21. Well didn't we learn in 9th grade biology that ovulation can occur
5 days before intercourse and still result in a pregnancy? So by this douchebags logic you'd have to be psychic to have a hormonal shift occur during an assault.

36. Not quite.
Sex up to five days before ovulation can result in pregnancy, as a result of sperm survival in fertile cervical mucus. The fertile period after ovulation is determined by egg survival- ova are generally viable for only 24 hours (although those using periodic abstinence to avoid pregnancy generally wait longer in case of double ovulation.)

"As written, the bill says, "No person is required to perform or participate in medical procedures or distribution of any medication which will or may result in abortion or termination of life."

As I read it, that can easily be interpreted to cover the birth control pill, if all emergency contraception is is a high dose of the same.

...most women either are not fertile during assault or do not become pregnant because the trauma prompts a hormonal response that prevents ovulation.

Could a trauma then correct hormonal deficiencies?

Doctor: "You have diabetes"
Patient: "What can be done?"
Doctor: "We have an experimental procedure. I kick the crap out of you and see if that corrects it!"
Patient: "Oh, O.K. Will my insurance cover this?"

This needs to be studied!

Second, Hardin County, Ohio is one of the biggest ass-backwards hillbilly heavens in Ohio, especially around Kenton.

... he's just plain nutty.

Check this from his website:

-snip-

In 1997, Dr. Dobbins was faced with the frailty of life when he underwent open heart surgery. His faith and reliance on God grew even deeper during this time. He poured out his heart by humbly asking God to spare his life in return for emptying his mind of all the wisdom God had given him. God answered that prayer and thus began the next turn in his life.

39. A good comeback, and philosophical question
Now, here's something I've always wondered about:
I've never believed the fairy tale, although it makes a nice story, about Jesus's conception. If Mary knew nothing about her pregnancy until informed, she supposedly knew nothing about how she became pregnant and certainly could not have consented, isn't that technically rape?
Greek and Roman mythology is full of such stories, gods raping mortal women, and producing more gods.

I know, blasphemy and all that, but I'm also wondering how a doctor like this one in Ohio would answer such a question.

48. Actually, in some cases of rape
A woman becomes physically aroused.

NOW BEFORE ANYONE GOES APE-SHIT PAY ATTENTION;

The reason this "doctor" has no clue is because he never did any anthropological reproductive studies.

Many females (of many species), become unwillingly aroused when attacked and raped. It's a biological reaction to impending intercourse... in nearly all cases, when it happens, it cannot be helped.

This is one of the reasons many women feel guilty and ashamed after being raped, they couldn't help being aroused... and when that happens, a woman becomes more fertile, not less.
http://tinyurl.com/pngss

This jackass doesn't know what he's talking about.

One Anti-Choice site suggested merely 550 women per year become pregnant as a result of rape.
What bullshit.
The fact of the matter is nearly ten percent of rape cases result in pregnancy.
http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/factsheets/svfacts.htm

And that amount to tens of thousands a year.

That 'Doctor' ought to be flogged and stripped of his BS title.

Why some people, such as this 'Doctor', think it's asking too much to provide these women with a safe preventative measure as an alternative is beyond my understanding.

70. Even if it were "merely" 550, that's more than enough to me.
But of course biologically there is little reason why unconsentual sex couldn't result in a fertilized egg and consequently pregnancy. It's not like there's a magical enzyme that suddenly appears whenever a woman says "No".

How many conditions would doctors not treat if they only treated things that happened to most people? How many people would die because of allergies and bad drug interactions? How many children with disabilities would be denied help? How many young people would die of strokes and heart attacks?
Even if only 1% of rape victims would get pregnant during an attack, those women deserve to have that pregnancy prevented.

Women who have been raped don't talk about it, but a good number of rapes involve sodomy. The rapists tend to think this is the best way to humiliate their victims.

64. this quack should have his license pulled on the strength...
...of the "I think life begins when..." phrase alone. Obviously his freshman biology course didn't "stick." The precursors to the event he describes-- oocytes and spermatocytes-- were themselves alive, as were their precursors at one end of the embryos that they developed from, and so on. There was no time in which life was NOT involved. All life is connected in an unbroken chain of causality that extends backward to the first self-replicating archeo-prokaryotes-- to suggest otherwise is to posit either spontaneous generation somewhere along the way or some sort of supernatural serial creation that even the Christians don't suggest.

65. that is ridiculous
soldiers throughout history can refute that claim, they spread their genes and crushed the spirits of the people they invaded by raping the women, and plenty turned up pregnant, that's why it was a cruel but effective technique

a few years back didn't we hear that 40 percent of humanity is descended from genghis khan? it sure wasn't because he was a nice guy who kept it in his pants when the lady said "please no"

Women can't get raped wearing jeans.

69. Hell, I can remove the pair of jeans I have on without even unzipping
or unbuttoning.

Even in the case of tighter pants, if they could be pulled up, they can certainly be pulled down. It is a logistically absurd argument.

76. I think it's actually more an issue of the fit of the jeans
They're very low rise, and they've stretched out a bit with wear.

Anyway, I prefer the term petite. :)

The worst thing is that anti-abortionists grab on to this kind of MYTH and hold onto it for dear life as a reason why it's A-OK to take away women's rights over their own bodies.

72. Be that as it may, still don't matter. If a woman DOES get pregnant
during a rape and wants an abortion she has a right to. Funny how even Dr. Repukers can't understand simple logic. If A then B. Duh.

Arkansas former Health and Human Services Dept. head.

Faye Boozman, M.D., ran for the US Senate, said a similar thing, probably cost him the election, thank God!

(Faye is now dead from a heart attack or something, but he literally said the same thing)

Total B.S.

84. Some info on that quack
Okay, I couldn't find right away if he's ever been sanctioned by anyone, but here's a clue: he's an FP in emergency medicine.

Now, I know this sounds bad coming from an internist's wife, but few emergency dept's like to hire FPs if they can avoid it. They only do it if they can't find an emergency doc. Also, I know very few FPs who do emergency medicine--if they wanted to do emergency, they would've done their residency in that.

This says a couple of things to me: he sucks at running his own practice or doesn't work well with others or has a couple of strikes against him. I can't think of many places in the country an FP can't get into practice--they're quite valuable, even if you disagree with how they're trained.

I'm going to keep looking into this guy.

86. More
From what I've seen, he didn't finish his residency. Now, that could just be bad info, as the same site had the wrong address for my husband (but the rest was right), but that also smacks of a problem.

94. My hubby clarified it.
He thinks that he finished his residency but that the way he did it, with a transition year, threw off the database. Apparently, according to the AMA, he's board-certified, but I couldn't double-check that.

He went to the University of Cinncinnati's med school, which wasn't good enough for my elitest hubby ( ;) ). He got odd vibes there when he interviewed and ended up at Case instead. His residency programs sound good, though.

85. There was a time when everyone (even doctors)
believed that "normal" women had no sex drive. It was even written up that way in medical textbooks! Of course that was about 100 years ago during the Victorian era. It sounds like this "doctor" is a throwback to that period.

Ask a friend to give you some, and pay for her to get a replacement pack.

Glad to see the Princeton University web site has this information, and it's available at lots of other places as well.
