Kerry Unsure If He'll Support Censure
Massachusetts Senator In Cincinnati To Meet With Mayor

CINCINNATI -- Sen. John Kerry said he'll need to take a closer look at a proposal to censure President George W. Bush before he decides whether to support it.

The 2004 Democratic presidential nominee from Massachusetts is in Cincinnati to meet with Mayor Mark Mallory and attend a roundtable discussion with small-business advocates.

Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., said Sunday he will introduce a resolution to censure Bush for authorizing domestic eavesdropping of suspected terrorists.

Kerry said that although he wants to hold Bush accountable for his actions, the proposal to censure the president needs more study.

1. Sounds just like what Kerry would say if he has not read the resolution
He said the same thing for Alito, for example.

Feingold decided on his own.

He says he needs to read the bill before signing on. Nothing bad. He said the same thing on Alito. We all know what happened.

I have higher standards for my senators. Sorry.

Edited on Mon Mar-13-06 03:49 PM by Tesha
So here's what Kerry *SHOULD* say:

"I haven't had a chance to read Senator Feingold's motion to censure,
but I know that if it contains even *HALF* the allegations against the
President that we all know to be true, then I'll gladly support it.

For example, if Senator Feingold alleges that President Bush
lied to cause us to invade Iraq..."

"Or if Senator Feingold alleges that Bush abused his position
to enrich his friends at Hallyburton, and Enron, and Exxon/Mobil..."

"Or if it's alleged that deliberate deriliction of presidential
duty led to the shameful failure to act ahead of the levees
in New Orleans being breached..."

But Kerry is a political coward, so he won't say anything like
this until he's sure that the rest of the party is charging in
ahead of him.

90. Curious though, ain't it, that Kerry takes more time to "study" this bill
than he did before signing the Patriot Act?

Curious too that it was Russ Feingold who was the ONLY SENATOR to NOT sign the Patriot Act?

I know you have high standards for your Senators, the question is, which Senator do you trust more?

The one who submitted the Clean Elections bill. The one who wanted further inquiry into CIA drugrunning. The one who wanted an inquiry into Downing Street Memos.

117. My point is that even though Kerry did those great things...
Edited on Mon Mar-13-06 04:37 PM by file83
...why the FUCK is he playing politics here?

Kerry took great political risks by investigating the CIA drug running (but he also knew that if his investigations revealed corruption - it would pay back in HUGE political dividends and put his name on the map). High Risk - High Reward.

Yet Kerry obviously signed the Patriot Act without knowing what he was signing because it was the safest political move to make at the time. Fuck all what it meant for our civil liberties, right?

Yet Feingold made the most dangerous and courageous move I've ever seen (with little potential political "reward") - by doing the RIGHT thing, not bowing to SEVERE political pressure - and did NOT vote for the USA Patriot Act.

So, now Feingold makes yet another politically risky move by proposing a bill for censure, yet Kerry now wants to "take the time" to read something that he should already be well informed on (we know he can do this because of his previous accomplishments you pointed out)?

This is just Kerry playing politics - he knows that if he backs this Feingold bill AND if it passes, he knows Feingold's leadership will put him in a much stronger position for 2008 than it would for Kerry. But Kerry must also way the fact that if he doesn't support this bill, he could suffer from the voters. Kerry is carefully weighing NOT the contents of the bill, but the political momentum it might give Feingold.

131. Bull - the MEDIA is playing the story all wrong and YOU are letting em.
And Why did Feingold not support investigating DSM?

Why was Feingold not with Clean Elections?

Why was Feingold never interested in CIA drugrunning that was supporting terrorists while decimating black neighborhoods?

Did Feingold testify to allow gays to serve openly in the military?

Don't even TRY to pretend that Feingold has shown more courage in the senate than Kerry has. Kerry and Feingold were NOT that far apart on Patriot Act. Kerry supported about 90% of it and Feingold supports about 85% of it..

Maybe if Feingold and other senators supported Kerry when he wanted Clinton to open the books on BCCI, no 9-11 could have happened, no Bush would be in office, and no anti-terror legilslation would be needed today.

Did you really want IranContra to go uninvestigated or exposed?

Did you really want BCCi to go univestigated and exposed?

Did you really want CIA drugrunning to remain hidden?

Did you really want Vietnam, Iran-Iraq war, and the illegal wars in Central America to last longer?

Did you NOT want a Clean Elections bill offered in the Senate?

Did you NOT want a Dem senator to warn this nation about the growing terror threat in 1997?

Were you in waiting for some other senator to favor investigations into DSM or filibuster Alito?

is now considered "Conspiracy Theorist"? Yeah, that makes a whole lot of sense. :dunce::silly::dunce:

Attempting to discredit through mischaracterization is really original. The ironic part is that your mistrust of the mainstream media is by definition a "conspiracy theory". Are you wrong? Maybe not, but then that means that you are yourself a "conspiracy theorist", so I'm not really sure what your point was, do you?

148. I was being sarcastic when I said that because I knew that
someone would eventually pull out that phrase. Sarcasm. :sarcasm: Get it? (Hence my countdown "4...3...2...")

My point is that so many people discuss political motives ALL DAY LONG here at the DU (and everywhere else) but some "motives" are taboo, and therefore "off limits" even though they are perfectly legitmate (such as the life long relationship S&B has on it's members, which number many in politics and not just limited to Bush & Kerry).

It is simply a mistake to write off this relationship between Bush and Kerry but so many do in a such a passionate way by labeling anyone that brings it up as a "conspiracy theorist".

149. Well excuse me
I guess my sarcasm detector wasn't working.

Meanwhile, you're attaching stigma to the term "conspiracy theorist" which frankly you don't know if I meant. It is a theory, is it not? Since you're using other relationships withing S&B to try to "prove" or "theorize" a similar relationship between Bush and Kerry. I assume you don't have any actual proof to back that up. If you do, then it may be something more than a theory and my characterization was incorrect.

That said, theories aren't always wrong. I never said you were full of shit or that your argument was off limits or otherwise illegitmate. Don't take your frustrations with other people out on me.

In any case: I think you're taking me as being a vehement anti-Kerry person - I'm not. It does however hardly seem arguable that Kerry is among the often-puts-finger-in-the-wind-to-see-what-he-thinks crowd more than some others (Dean leaps to mind quickly, for example). His "not having read" the censure proposal in a timely manner suggests that this may be one of those cases.

Bush could be impeached for the IWR. Kerry was NEVER in favor of invading Iraq. Had IWR been followed, we would not be in Iraq. PERIOD.

Feingold didn't immediately say what he was doing on the Alito filibuster. No one posted the this type of nonsense before he made a definitive statement. (In fact the comments posted here mentioned his view that the President should get his appointees - even though I think that was for cabinet posts.)

So far, you have Kerry's office saying yes and a MSNBC article saying he needed to look at it. Who knows when they got the quote.

80. DU has a double standard for Kerry and Feingold
It's ok if Feingold doesn't start a filibuster or immediately jump on board with it. It's ok if Feingold voted for Ashcroft and Roberts. It's ok that Feingold is talking about censure as an alternative to impeachment, which from any other senator would get him labeled a DINO sellout. It's ok for people to mock Kerry's filibuster - a far more substantive stand that a censure, since stopping Alito would have actually done some good, whereas a censure is just red meat thrown to the base - but it's not ok to admit that a censure is basically a useless feel-good measure that will surely fail the Senate.

The double standard is huge and it is unwarranted.

Boy, they are good at "spinning". Oh, yeah, he voted for "Authorization of the use of force".

The only problem with that horseshit is that anyone with an IQ above that of a turnip could see that Bush was going to use force no matter what.

And no one with comprehension skills would blame the IWR - the IWR would have prevented war with any other president administering it, even Reagan.

Bush VIOLATED the IWR.

78. I'm sure Kerry wasn't shocked
He was quoted in Nov, 2002 - he cautiously hoped the IWR would help avert the war. Remember that troops were already amassed when they voted. The DSM say the US and UK were already in on going to war. During the election, Teresa was quoted as saying that the impact of the IWR was that the war was likely delayed 4 or 5 months - and that they had hoped it could be avoided.

The vote didn't cause the war. Kerry spoke out against going to war before Bush invaded.

they "responsibly" voted for it. They don't need to sign on first, it is a no brainer to say it merits very serious consideration for the following reasons (unending litany of bush's screwups) and I look forward to discussing it in more detail with Senator Feingold.

Feingold may have misspoken this morning when he said censure was appropriate remedy over impeachment which is a radical measure - but, if he didn't misspeak and meant that, then I don't think I support censure in that case when the house is working for impeachment.

67. You need to do a little research:
"One of the few things I enjoyed hearing in Judge Alito’s confirmation hearings was his statement that no one, not even the President, is above the law. If only the man who nominated him for the Supreme Court took those words to heart. Today the president spoke for nearly two hours, but failed to explain why he considers himself above the law. The president has yet explain why the secret FISA courts are not good enough or fast enough, or tell Congress what changes need to be made in the law. It’s time for a real investigation to get to the truth."

29. Bush admitted publicly that he broke the law, and vowed to continue
doing so. It should not have taken this long for a Representative of the people to at least censure him for that. I'm glad Feingold is at least focusing on the lies Bush told.

I'm not sure what there is to study, the FISA law was broken, the Republicans are planning to try to make it go away by changing the law. They will get away with it unless Demcorats get some spine and force the issue to the front pages.

Kerry could introduce a bill asking for a thorough investigation of what they were doing, who they were spying on. Comey was supposed to testify but the hearings were cancelled. Why are Dems not screaming about this? Byrd has a petition asking for an investigation. Republicans could be forced to sign such a bill now since polls show this issue, Domestic spying, is of great concern to the American people.

96. He is actually working on something else today
He is the Ranking member of the Small Business Committee. He is in Ohio meeting with representatives of small businesses and the mayor. The SBA just had its budget slashed again - including cutting or eliminating programs that have been shown to more than pay off. Your state is very affected by this as the budget funds the disaster loans. Have you called your Senators? The MA people have called theirs and likely have better information - The media wouldn't put out false info would they - and suggesting Kerry was against it could make it seem riskier for a Senator on the fence.

Kerry was one of the first to clearly and unequivically condemn the wireless warrants. If there's any complication, it might be that censures usually follow investigations. Also, once there's a censure vote that fails, there may never be an investigation. It might be a good idea to wait for him to issue an official statement or to vote.

112. Where was Feingold with an Alito filibuster?
Edited on Mon Mar-13-06 04:16 PM by karynnj
He was on the judiciary and could have started it a few weeks earlier. Kerry couldn't as he was in India, Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Jordan and Israel for the SFRC. Even if he were home, he would have to check that no one on that committee was doing anything.

He did call for an Independent investigator

108. Shouldn't you be calling your own Senators?
Kerry is meeting with Ohio Small Business people as part of his job as ranking member of the Small Business Association. He was one of the first to speak out against the warrantless wiretaps and he has said that what Bush did violated the law. I assume he wants to put out a persuasive thoughtful statement - as he routinely does.

By the way, Kerry is one of a very small number of Senators who never took PAC money. He and Wellstone were the sponsors of the Clean Elections Act that would have taken that type of money out of politics. He also pursued BCCI inspite of the fact that Democratic money men were complicit. So that charge really doesn't work.

he is weighing how much it will hurt him not to join in versus how much it will help Feingold to be seen leading on this issue. My hope is that he will take a deep breath and put the country above 2008 politics.

On edit: Well done, Senator Kerry:D

57. Like with the Downing Street Memo inquiry he wanted that Feingold didn't?
Or like the Alito filibuster that he was STUCK leading when no one from the judiciary committee would support Kennedy?

Get a grip. Read the corporate media headlines and you get what you get.

54. Headline is misleading.
Once again. I'll give Kerry the benefit of the doubt here. He is considering the censure proposal. Hopefully he will decide that the criminally incompetent traitors in the executive branch deserve to be censured. Soon.

95. Not misleading. That's the problem.
The headline reflects what Kerry is saying. I have no problem with him being careful before committing to censure, wanting to read the censure proposal, etc.... but he has to realize what is going to be done with his statements. He has to realize that every time he opens his mouth it should be to take advantage of opportunity, not to give opportunity to others.

What could have been said: "I believe that this administration has acted in ways that scream for accountability and justice. The interests of the American people are at stake here. I am interested in the idea of censure, at a minimum, as a vehicle to shed light on misdeeds and I'll wait to comment on the censure resolution itself until I have a chance to hear my good friend Senator Feingold present the text and details."

This is unifying for dems and critical of the administration at the same time...as opposed to divisive and gray.

105. Well, Kerry "got away with" not reading the USA Patriot Act before
he signed it. It was re-written only hours before it was put up for vote so no one was able to actually review it. Senator Feingold was the ONLY Senator to NOT sign the bill for that reason. Funny how Kerry seems to be so cautious now and taking his time to support an issue he should already be very well read up on, afterall, like you said, it's his job!

Still someday I hope to see this misleading headline:

The second sentence, a question, is not a complete thought. If you'd care to rewrite it so that I can understand your point, I will re-read.

1. I did read the post about Kerry's comment.

2. I am informed.

3. No, I most definitely don't believe much of what I've read or heard in the media.

4. If Kerry was undecided about how he was going to vote, with regard to Fiengold's resolution, he could have at least made a some sort of generally supportive statement.

5. If the media has misquoted Kerry, then I'd be pleased.

Regarding the unclear sentence, it was a poor piece of writing. Your subsequent responses have shown
that you could have done better the first time.

As for my comment "much better", I was attempting to move our dialog out of an almost nasty tone toward humor. But, you didn't take it that way.

As a side note: I have noticed that people are usually free to comment about anything that's on their mind. However, if one criticizes Kerry, they should be prepared to be attacked by at least one person. I've often wondered why that was the case.

I voted for Kerry. But, I was disappointed with his campaign, his positions and his conduct after the election. I was indeed be sad to see him nominated again. However, I would vote for him.

Please, let's stop this bickering and focus our energy on getting Dems elected in 2006 and 2008.

170. I would be very pleased to see Kerry produce his statement
supporting the general premise of Feingold's resolution. But, if he does, I will offer no apology as none was warranted. Had he wanted to lead the Democrats, he should have done so today, not wait to find out which way the wind is blowing. In the only polls I've seen today, the people on the INTERNET have voted between 75% and 85% in favor of the resolution. That's support at this point.
If Kerry comes out in a couple of days in support, it's weaker than if he did it today. He could have ready the very important resolution yesterday had he desired to do so.

Many of us aren't fans of Kerry. We voice our criticism when we feel it is deserved. You and other Kerry supporters have the habit of launching vicious attacks against fellow DU's, who are doing their best to participate in the political dialog. It would be better if you and the other sycophants would focus on professional politicians and political issue rather than trying to make your fellow bloggers appear to be wrong.

166. I will feel much better about this Kerry issue when I hear from
him that he supports at least the premise of Feingold's resolution. Your idea that many of us are
anxious to attack Kerry is not correct, at least it isn't for me. Kerry is one of the most influential Democrats. Feingold's attack is a carefully planned strike at the heart of the Bush administration's corruption. It was a bold an dangerous, for him, move. But, it was a good move.
He needs all the support he can get. The last thing we need is for one of our top leaders to make a public statement, if the news article is true, that would clearly indicate his lack of enthusiasm for the resolution. If he did say that and sticks to that, the resolution is DEAD, shot down before it hardly got off the ground.

Bush and company have almost completed a COUP D'ETAT by using every illegal tactic they could think of. It's time for some politicians to start fighting back. The politicians who are brave enough to move in on Bush must be supported for there to be any chance of launching a success ul
counter coup.

Per sonly, I don't have a very high regard for Kerry although I voted for him and would do so again. He hasn't, in my opinion, shown much courage and imagination since the time he was nominated. I don't think his luke warm style is going to unseat the Republicans. But, what do I know? No more than the rest of the Amer can people who have been denied the real truth for several years. We are all just guessing as to what might be the best winning strategy.

Kerry is spineless. How 'bout that STRONG condemnation of the DSM? Anyone see it on camera? No? That's because he refused to make a floor statement.

182. No kidding. Kerry's office
was giving that word hours before Feingold spoke. Kerry's office was the only one saying YES.

184. I have heard several people saying that they have heard this from Kerry's
office, that he is going to support the Censure.
