143. It would be a radical move in a Republican held congress.
I suppose it depends upon how one is using the word radical. I think it is clear from the text of his speech that he considers impeachment a possibility.

As we move forward, Congress will need to consider a range of possible actions, including investigations, independent commissions, legislation, or even impeachment. But, at a minimum, Congress should censure a president who has so plainly broken the law.

"including...even impeachment" "at a minimum"

There is no excuse for any Dem in congress not to support a resolution of censure at this point in time. It is not a sign of weakness but of growing strength.

142. It's political realism and true leadership understands how that works.
With a Republican controlled congress Censure is a much easier accomplishment than impeachment, but that doesn't mean it would be easy. A censure would even further erode whatever political capital Bush has left. It would be great during a mid-term election when impeachment isn't feasible. It does not rule out the possibility of impeachment, in fact it casts more light on the subject. It might spur a renewed investigation and examination of the program. It can certainly serve as a first step.

He's the man and the candidate for 2008 we need the unafraid because:
I AM DEMOCRACY!

I came from a proud family who were willing to sacrifice their very lives. In my early years they carefully nurtured me. My future prospects were healthy and bright, and I grew up with honor.

Now you see me before your eyes, ragged, dirty, abused and invisible to many Americans. Your present leaders have trampled on me, ignored and misused me, as apathetic Americans stand by watching. Your majority in Congress does not protect me.

Underneath the grime and misuse, I still have hope that you won’t let me die!

I AM DEMOCRACY AND I AM HOMELESS!

135. According to AP Wire Story, Feingold gets "little support" from Dems
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060313/ap_on_go_co/feingold_censure

Feingold Draws Little Support for Censure

WASHINGTON - Democrats distanced themselves Monday from Wisconsin Sen. Russell Feingold's effort to censure President Bush over domestic spying, maneuvering to prevent a vote that could alienate voters. Republicans dared Democrats to vote for the proposal.

(snip)

Even as he spoke, Democratic leaders maneuvered to hold off the immediate vote that Majority Leader Bill Frist requested.

Throughout the day, Feingold's fellow Democrats said they understood his frustration but they held back overt support for the resolution.

Several said they wanted first to see the Senate Intelligence Committee finish an investigation of the warrantless wiretapping program that Bush authorized as part of his war on terrorism.

(snip)

Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., said he had not read it either and wasn't inclined simply to scold the president.

"I'd prefer to see us solve the problem," Lieberman told reporters.

Across the Capitol, reaction was similar. Feingold's censure resolution drew empathy but no outright support from Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Pelosi "understands Sen. Feingold's frustration that the facts about the NSA domestic surveillance program have not been disclosed appropriately to Congress," her office said in a statement. "Both the House and the Senate must fully investigate the program and assign responsibility for any laws that may have been broken."

145. Frist's smokescreen: war
I am sick and tired of these idiots (Frist notably) claiming :
“It is addressed at attacking the president of the United States when we’re at war, when the president is leading us with a program that is lawful, is constitutional, that is vital to the safety and security of the American people.” - Frist's comments on the floor today

"we're at war": WTF is this?? We are at war because of Bush's lies. Don't throw the 9/11 BS at me either. Were we at war with anti-government kooks like Tim McVeigh after Oklahoma City?

"leading us..." Leading us??!! Leading us off a freakin' cliff!

"vital to the safety and security of the American people.” The only GD thing vital to my safety and security is to see fascist, anti-freedom, bastards like Frist and his ilk in jail.

I HAVE HAD IT WITH THESE BASTARDS!!!

146. Feingold's goal - bring the debate back to Bush's lies.
The point isn't to get 51 votes in the Senate - it's to force the MSM debate back onto the (largely forgotten) wiretapping issue and Bush's lies. Feingold, by introducing the censure, is daring Republicans to attack him. It's on a Monday, so he hopes to keep this going all week, and get plum spots on the Sunday pundit shows. If the story stays on the air for a whole week, Feingold's gambit is a winner.

Many, many thanks to Sen. Feingold for putting on the asbestos suit and staring down the flamethrowers! :patriot:
