Democrats Beat Quick Retreat on Call to Censure President
By CARL HULSE

WASHINGTON, March 13 — Senate Democrats on Monday blocked an immediate vote on a call by one of their own to censure President Bush for his eavesdropping program.

They acted after Republicans said they were eager to pass judgment on a proposal that they portrayed as baseless and disruptive to the antiterror effort.

I call bullshit. BULLSHIT!

This is as good a headline as the one last week that stated Dems had been indicted. See Top Ten Conservative Idiots if you don't know which one I mean.

There was no retreat. The first two sentences of the article tell the real story. The Republicans wanted immediate action and the Democrats blocked it.

This is either an idiot functioning as an editor or deliberate Dem bashing. Maybe both.

No accusations of cowardice here. This gives time for the discussion to continue and the issue to gain wider awareness. The Republicans wanted to bury it and the Dems didn't let them.

Shame on you if you buy into this crappy headline and heaping more shame if you haven't called your two senators to tell them to shit or get off the pot. Do they support censure or criminal activity? It's a simple multiple choice question here folks, no need to struggle for an essay answer.

2. Yep, I agree.
This is a tactic of Frist's that has a demonstrated pattern.

He did the same thing when Rep. Murtha called for withdrawal of troops from Iraq.

Further, the Republican ass-hats always first tinker with whatever they're calling for "immediate action" on, stripping down the original call into something so cartoonish it almost has to be voted against.

This does not excuse, though, any dearth of support for Feingold from fellow Dems.

The time is long past to step up to the plate.

6. Remember Rangel's version of Draft? They stripped out part which would
have ensured no deferments.

5. Sorry, but they are wrong this time.
The issue isn't dead unless we let it die. Sucks to live in a representative democracy sometimes but our representatives need to hear from us right now.

8. They don't reference where they're getting that quote from at the moment
But I'll say again, Dem response has been lackluster at best. It's so frustrating.

However, Frist pulls this "immediate vote" crap all the time, and it's probably best not to give him any ground there, either.

10. victory for the wh would be quick "no" vote and be done with it.
anything that delays that and keeps the issue open for further discussion and more headlines is a victory for dems.

13. What I see is a pending story that doesn't link to anything yet and...
a link further down the page that takes you to the NY times story I linked above.

On the other hand we're hearing stories all over DU of Senate staffers saying the Senator has not made a decision yet.

*shrug*

14. I just sent Hulse this . . .
Why such a misleading title for your article regarding the censure motion?

The democrats did not, as you mistakenly assert "beat a hasty retreat." They blocked an immediate vote, preferring to have further discussion and review of the topic.

There is an extremely large difference between the two.

15. Thank you!
Unfortunately, reporters often have very little control over their headlines. It's the editors who come up with these gems. I hope he chews out his editor over this.

20. Modern Democrats do not seem capable of planning.
Edited on Tue Mar-14-06 04:12 PM by gordianot
Our leadership is weak. Russ Feingold asks for censure and the Democrats waffle waiting for constituent opinion to catch up. By the time they get enough phone calls, Russ Feingold (or another sacrificial goat)is left twisting while Republicans maneuver to block whatever the Democrats wanted.

So the Republican majority appears to have won again (no censure vote) and the Democrats allow themselves to appear weak (due to weak leadership). I hope the sacrificial goat turns on them.
