US spends its way to 28 Eiffel towers: made out of pure gold
From Tim Reid in Washington

IF YOU are worried about how much you owe on your credit cards, this might put things in perspective: America’s national debt limit was increased yesterday to $9 trillion. That’s $9,000,000,000,000 — enough to buy Buckingham Palace 9,000 times.

The increase, passed by Congress, allows the Government to borrow another $781 billion (£447 billion), increasing the national debt limit — the maximum America can borrow — from $8 trillion and $184 billion to $8 trillion and $961 billion.

If the debt ceiling, which is set by Congress, had not been raised by March 24, the Administration would not have been able to borrow more money and the US would have begun to default on its domestic and foreign obligations, an untenable consequence.

1. We are screwed. Over 1/4 of that debt is owned by other countries!

Welcome to George effing Bush's America! Republican conservatism at its finest. You would think so called "conservatives" would be outraged. But no. Their pride has turned them into masochists. They have learned to love the pain despite the damage; ironically to try and save face.

There is no one to blame now but themselves. In the Reagan era, they blamed a democratic held congress. The ball is totally in their court and they have failed miserably. Face it republican freeper trolls, your leaders have failed you. They have misled you. They have lied to you. They talk conservative talk and then turn around and spit on you, take benefits from your parents and grandparents, reduced veterans benefits for our men and women in uniform, spend money on illegal foriegn wars while our infrastructure falls apart. They distract you from the real issues by creating scenarios of fear. Fear gay marriage. Fear terrorists. Fear unarmed countries. Fear the bird flu. Fear homosexuals. Fear, Fear, Fear FEAR. How does it feel? How does it truly feel to be used and abused by this administration?

Oh the irony. Albeit sadly, part of me delights in your misery thinking "we told you so" even as the better part of me weeps for our nation. God help us all, good Republicans and good Democrats alike. God help us all.

3. Well, that puts the ports deal into perspective, doesn't it?
Over 1/4 of that debt is owned by other countries!

So what's a port here and there, or all of them?
