"V for Vendetta" - how long before it gets banned in the US?
Edited on Sun Mar-19-06 12:28 PM by noahmijo
I just saw this awesome movie yesterday.

Seriously the makers took BLATENT shots at the bush admin through creating a futuristic
facist England.

In the film England's Conservative Party gains power via unleashing a dangerous virus onto its own people and blame Muslim terrorists for it. Those who hatched the plan figure what better way to gain power than by controlling the people through fear and convincing them that their system of control and obediance is the best way to ensure safety.

Then the aspect of religion comes into play and although it's not stated as Christianity it's obvious that those in power have turned the nation into a Christo-facist state.

We find that the Koran and other religious forms are completely outlawed, and many other freedoms including music and media are outlawed all the name of your safety, such as concentration type camps being set up where certain "undesirables" meaning people who dare to be unique, gay, or do not conform to the system of control are tortured via eletricution and severe beatings.

The Iraq war is mentioned as a bit of a catalyst for all that is happening and I would say the most blatent shot came from a scene in the basement of a major tv show host in the movie who is secretly against the facist government who has a picture of an English flag and an American flag spliced together but in the center we see a Swastika and below it reads "Coalition of the Willing"

Overall fantastic movie but very creepy the audience for the most part walked out in silence.

Go see it before the * Admin has it banned!

*Okay note it seems as though people are taking me seriously about the banned thing. I know damn well it won't be banned as if it was there would be a HUGE uproar I mean people who aren't even political would be furious at the government and if anything they would feel like throwing on a Guy Fawke's mask themselves and marching to the capital.

I'm just not overlooking the fact that if this administration could ban this movie and get away with it they would in a second.*

26. I heard it on the local news here
There is a bill being considered in the capitol to ban any cable station in Missouri from airing Brokeback Mountain.

Now is that ridiculous or what?

12. It'll only be discredited
The neocon pundits will only pan the movie and "remind" moviegoers that's it's only fiction.

I'm kinda surprised they haven't tried to do so already. I'm starting to wonder if they have all decided to simply ignore it.

15. No ban, just blatant propaganda smears to do their work
If people go to the movie with preconcieved bias , planted by right wingers, they dont give it a chance to speak to them. They ignore the message, and just say its all a lie. Michael Moores F-911 for example.

16. Profits trump ideology every time
Edited on Sun Mar-19-06 08:38 PM by nini
As long as a movie makes a buck, it has ZERO chance of being banned. A community here and there could decide not to show it, but there will be no directive from on high to BAN it.

I enjoyed the hell out of the film, but it is entertainment first, with its polemics taking a distant second. As salient as some of its points are, it has no more chance of being banned (or bringing down Bush, if you take it from the opposite tack of the hysteria spectrum) than Orwell's '1984', its clearest predecessor.

Think of it this way: If the Bush people banned it, could you imagine the underground bootleg business it would do? Ever hear of the forbidden fruit syndrome?

(Edit: This is ZW accidentally posting under nini's name... oops!)

She enjoyed the movie too, for what it's worth, lol

18. They don't take it seriously because they don't have to
Every time I see someone talk about how this or that movie is going to wake people up I remember F911, I remember Good Night and Good Luck, I remember countless other books and movies that SHOULD wake people up. But they don't. Those of us who are awake were so before and remain so after. Those asleep remain asleep (note sig)

Just line in Fahrenheit 451 where it's pointed out that we had the books before and we didn't use them.

"For it is the doom of men that they forget." (name that movie)

19. As long as a majority of people live a comfortable lifestyle
nothing will change. There's no threat in this type of entertainment.

The way republicans are screwing people right now, that could provide motivation. That must be why they love the idea of warrantless wiretaps, endless detention without charge, "rendering" to pro-torture countries, and the PATRIOT act so much.

Great line among many in that film. Great film.

On edit: Here's another line, spoken by Merlin when Arthur asks him what the greatest quality is in a knight.

"Truth. Yes, definitely truth. For when a man lies, he murders some part of the world."

20. it won't be banned
but be ready for a full scale assault by the media.. They're gonna focus on saying the movie suggests that Bush was behind 9/11, in an attempt to discredit all of its points.

22. If It's a Hit Film...
...and it may be, since it's from the Wachowski brothers (of the Matrix films), I hope that people will think about the issues the film raises. I hope that it won't be just mindless entertainment to most people. And if the conservatives don't like the film, too bad. The truth hurts.

If you suck on a tit the movie gets an R rating. If you hack the tit off with an axe it will be PG.

Carlyle Group Acquiring Lowes
by TealVeal
Mon Jun 21, 2004 at 03:37:23 PM PDT

I should probably explain that Lowes is a movie theater, for those who don't know what it is. It's in here, but you gotta look in the article for it, it's mingled in with various other business info.

So now the Military-Industrial Complex is purchasing popular movie outlets. Any bet on whether or not they would have allowed Farenheit 911 to show? How long until they start purchasing tv news outlets, book publishing companies, print outlets, etc.

Consolidation of ownership, ideas, and culture marches on one purchase at a time.
