Yesterday morning on the West Coast: waking up with George W. Bush
Does anyone else have a story about the West Coast's waking up yesterday morning to Shrub on every TV outlet, with his bizarro press conference? I have family there, and they reported it had a strange effect on them, so early in the morning. Reaction ranged from utter disbelief to a depression that lasted well into the day. Some co-workers arrived at work late, in strange moods. Someone reported here yesterday about arriving at work in a funk, only to find the office full of laughing co-workers in front of a TV screen.

This was a very large dose of W in the morning for the Left Coast. And for the rest of us. And for some, it was a true eye-opener.

3. I think they don't want the public to see the whole speech, only clips.
The nightly news, with its 5 second bites, can almost make him look coherent. I think thats why they schedule these things for 10 AM eastern, so noone will be watching and everyone will get their impression from the nightly news. But it appears they may have miscalculated, being so insular and self-centered, not realizing that western folks would have this on TV while they ate breakfast.

5. I think you may be right! He could have had a prime-time...
news conference, if they'd chosen that.

6. I caught most of the whole speech, just missed part of the beginning
.
.
.

It was uncut on a CSPAN channel I get up here

So although I was disgusted after a few minutes, I watched it all, to see if I could figure out how this demagogue has managed to stay in control of the USA

I failed

4. Northern Ontario watched the spectacle to it's end this morning
.
.
.

No real eye-opener

only confirmed what I have read on-line - news and forums combined.

The fact that GW even has 35+% support still amazes me

and depresses me

I have no confidence that the USA electorate will effect any big change in the USA's foreign policy - continually downhill since JFK in my opinion . . .

As GW slid through his rhetorical verbal diarrhea, and turned questioner's queries into another opening for a tirade about one thing or another, I could actually see some of the logic(used quite loosely here) that the listers would absorb, and accept as gospel.

Interesting to note, that unlike our conferences up here that the camera never left Bush, to take a peek at the audience or the speaker asking the question

Maybe that was so we couldn't see the obligatory "applause" and "laugh" signs? - which I thought some of the applause and laughter was way off - better timing on most sitcoms methinks

OH

Now I get it -

It wasn't a real speech . .

It was a spoof!

I wish . . .

(sigh)

7. My 9-year old son, home for spring recess, said.. "He doesn't
answer the questions that they ask,and he seems angry..why is he even THERE?"
I laughed, but really didn't have an answer for him..

12. I'm starting to wish I'd started the day with CNN, not a Daily Show rerun!
I like to begin with a good laugh, and it sounds like this was the next best thing!

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation even got into the act with the evening news broadcast -- they aired a few choice snippets of Bush's ramblings, and did not try to make him look coherent.

14. yes -- they also showed him picking up that fake turkey ...
Edited on Wed Mar-22-06 05:41 PM by Lisa
... a couple of years back, when he was trying to pose as "the founder of the feast". I know that CNN was all over it, but the CBC footage showed him picking up the centerpiece, grinning like a dolt, then plunking it back down again a few seconds later after they'd snapped his photo. It made him look opportunistic and insincere.

I don't think they are keen on burnishing his image. (The Globe and Mail photo editors are of a similar opinion ... they've frequently shown half-page closeups of his face, unretouched -- skin pores, whiskers he missed while shaving, etc. -- which give him a Nixonian appearance. Not the most pleasant thing to encounter when you're reading the paper over breakfast!)

16. Like I indicated in my above posts - the COMPLETE speech
.
.
.

and hour-long question and answer period was available to us on our Canadian cpac channel ( I believe I mistakenly indicated it was CSPAN - but it's "cpac")

We probably know more about what is going on down in your maladministration than YOU do

That shouldn't be too hard to believe . .
