Prosecutors drop sex case against teacher
She offers 'deepest apologies' to boy, 14, and his family

Wednesday, March 22, 2006; Posted: 2:09 a.m. EST (07:09 GMT)

Lafave, at a news conference Tuesday, said she is being treated for bipolar disorder.

OCALA, Florida (CNN) -- Prosecutors here dropped charges Tuesday against a former teacher accused of having sex with a middle school student.

"I am a strong Christian woman," she said. "I believe that God has a path for me, and this was just a bump in the road."

12. Bipolar disorder
is a devastating mental illness that makes the sufferers do appalling things during the "high" that they would never do with the disease under control. If she's bipolar, that would explain a lot. She may be a good Christian woman. With her disease in control, however, she may be a maniac who acts out sexually.

Only her psychiatrist knows for sure.

17. I'm not sure house arrest and probation is enough though, there........
....is still the issue of this 14 year old child she has sex with. I'm sorry, but I'm not nearly as concerned about the woman as I am about the child and his future mental health.

19. The charges were dropped, and I'm not sure how a jury would
have reacted had her bipolar illness been part of her defense.

There are a lot of bipolars in my family. It is a devastating illness and people do things on those "highs" that you wouldn't see them do unless someone had drugged them without their knowledge. It's a truly horrible and life wrecking disease.

As for the kid, of course he's going to need therapy, lots of it, to come to terms with that breach of trust that might have seemed like fun at the time but which will mess him up longterm.

I'm just not sure locking up a person for having a treatable mental illness will do the kid much good.

18. Manic phases of bipolar can be really weird
We had this old guy at our church. He and his wife were the nicest people, they taught the 3 year old Sunday School class for years.

It was discovered when he was in his 70s that he had bi-polar disorder. This was discovered because in his manic phases, he was having multiple affairs behind his wife's back, something that was not in character for him when he was at his baseline mood.

I'm not so sure this chick is bi-polar, I suspect she had a mostly male jury that fell for the old "Hot For Teacher" defense.

24. IF she's bipolar, and was undiagnosed, that would definitely explain
things... it would be a legitimate mental health defense. If. And, if she is, she so needs to be on meds today.

7. God can forgive
the repentant, but that didn't sound much like repentance to me.

I hope she does turn her life around, but she wasn't the only person hurt. It was a considerabale bump for the boy, and her husband and the time, and she was the one to blame.

But I still don't think that the definition of "strong, christian woman" included anything like this Much less molesting a fourteen year old student. But hey, like I said, I've been away from church a long time:shrug:
