Poll question: The new Know-Nothing agenda |
|
Are you afraid of what you have seen from the Left wing of the new Know-Nothings? The calls for a wall on the southern border, probably the northern border as well. Calls for economic isolationism from the global marketplace for goods and labor. Saying that we should be good neighbors as long as it doesn't involve American companies providing economic development overseas. Any outside investment in our country is "selling America." Suspicion of international organizations that rival the right's hatred of the UN.
Are you afraid of what you have seen from the Left wing of the new Know-Nothings?

It's about what seems to be a new nativeist movement in both parties.

... and rampant immigration.
Your sneering poll is nothing but flamebait and will not further dialogue in any way. If you want to bolster the case for the Neoliberal globalist agenda, then do so. Don't call people who are watching their lives being destroyed by it "know-nothings", and don't lump well-intentioned democrats who believe our borders should be controlled with the vigilante right-wing idiots who sit on the border with their pea-shooters.
What an offensive fucking post.
(ON EDIT - This is directed at the OP, not Vash - Sorry.)

It has never been required before. Actually the other side has through history been much more isolationistic.

Is this the to which you refer?
Democratic Underground is an online community for Democrats and other progressives. Members are expected to be generally supportive of progressive ideals, and to support Democratic candidates for political office. Democratic Underground is not affiliated with the Democratic Party, and comments posted here are not representative of the Democratic Party or its candidates.
First, it does say "and other progressives" (although I do consider myself a Democrat.
Second, it states that "embers are expected do be generally supportive of progressive ideals". I do not see how that precludes discussion of what good progressive ideals are, on the contrary, I believe such discussion is essential.

16. As an MBA Who Believes in the Benefits of Free Trade, |
|
I have to say no, I am not at all worried at all about the concerns that have been raised.
Free trade is not a policy that you should put in place unexamined. Politicians who care about their citizens have to look for ways free trade does not serve the best interests of the country or help citizens.
There are a lot of ways to address the trade imbalance and the negative impact of exporting jobs. The particular proposals you hear may not always the best, but they have to be considered alongside the status quo. Hopefully a new set of policies will emerge that will help the American worker without sacrificing the benefits of increased trade.
I would be more concerned if none of these things were not even on the radar. As it is, laissez-faire economics is not questioned and put to the test nearly often enough.

18. The right wing has no monopoly on... |
|
ignorance and stupidity, but at least they have greed to drive them.
I don't know where some of the stranger ideas on the left come from, but there doesn't seem to be any coherent goal with a lot of the fights the left insists on picking. The goals of the right are clear, if highly objectionable, but ours tend to disappear in the noise.

33. The new "Know Nothings" are fighting a losing battle. |
|
The poor will continue to come here no matter what draconian and racist laws are passed. The capitalists will continue to seek out cheap labor here, or overseas, to compete. If they can't compete, they're dead. And, the American people will continue to buy goods from anywhere because they're lower priced.
Welcome to the "free market" that America has been trumpeting for decades. The problem is that the Chinese, Indians, Brazilians, etc, are getting better at it than we are.
