Peter King (R-NY03) viciously attacks the Catholic church (Jail priests)
Edited on Fri Mar-24-06 10:35 AM by Bleachers7
Peter King is the sponsor of an immigration bill that would throw all illegals in prison. The Catholic church said that it would protect the illegals if the bill was passed. King flipped out and made these hate filled, xenophobic, outrageous comments slamming the Catholic church. I think he advocates locking up priests. Read on...

<snip>
Among the louder critics of the GOP proposals has been the Catholic Church, with Roger Cardinal Mahony of Los Angeles vowing his diocese wouldn't obey any laws that criminalize illegal aliens or the social service providers who help them. Brooklyn Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio has made similar comments.

King, a Catholic, slammed his own church yesterday as "un-Christian" for baselessly scaring the clergy and immigrants with doomsday scenarios.

"The Catholic Church is being totally fraudulent on this. If Cardinal Mahony spent as much time turning over information on pedophile priests as telling priests to violate the law on this, California would be a lot better than it is today," he told the Daily News Editorial Board.

"They're being totally un-Christian because they're talking about this being an evil bill, a meanspirited bill, that we're doing all this as subterfuge to lock them up," he said. "Now, we could lock them up for other reasons - with what they did with pedophilia and what they did to abuse kids in Catholic schools, we could have locked them up years ago."

2. He's doing the ole repug distraction two-step.
He's not addressing why the Catholic church isn't buying his bill. It's called compassion to all humans, something I thought repigs were supposed to have in abundance. Ha!

10. I still can't figure out how churches support wars
and the dictators that start them. Then again, the Catholic Church has been more vocal against the war at the top.

12. I don't know as I'm not
at all religious, but I do think the church is doing the right thing on this immigration issue. They want to take care of their flock and not let politics invade.

31. It's that single minded mentality so common in the RW
They seem incapable of caring about more than one issue at a time. And their particular daily passion is always more important than any other issue.

3. I think the point this asshat is trying to make is...
...that the church is being hypocritical...It wouldn't do a THING when it's priest raped children, but it WILL help illegal aliens...(I wonder what faith the majority of the illegals coming from south of the border is.....)

I disagree with HOW he says it, I disagree with the bill, but I can't disagree with him pointing out the hypocrisy it revealed....

17. So, are you saying that every priest or bishop was either aware
of or involved in pedophelia or the covering up of it? Are you aware that the statistics for this particular crime don't vary much from one religious group to another, it was just the deep hatred and prejudice against the Catholic Church that cause the extensive coverage that ignored its existence in other churches?

Do you know for a fact, eg, that any of the priests or bishops who are fighting this law, had anything at all to do with pedophelia??? I would like to have that info, if you do. I live in NY and will be calling King's office, and would not want to be met with a tirade that has some evidence behind it.

I am assuming he's got no such evidence, but your post seems to support his dragging something totally irrelevant into this discussion. Do you have a reason for that, other than maybe, your own particular prejudice against Catholics, which you're entitled to of course, but it does color the issue somewhat, if true.

4. Ahhh..I see
congressman king is using the "Look at the dangling, shiny keys over there." scenario that Stephanie MIller jokes about.
Notice that the cruxt of king's point is about oedophelia and not about immigration and the highly suspect bill that he is proposing.

7. of course, he doesn't want anyone thinking the church and faith can be

used to help people which many of us do out of faith every day. Don't look at the church treating people with respect, look at this.

9. Someone should change the subject on king and ask him
if he was okay with those nuns being murdered by right-wing death squads, that we financed, in El Salvador in the 80's. It has nothing to do with the discussion. But, if King wants to get off track, everyone should be able to do the same.

6. OOooooooopsie!!!! Do I see a wedge between the GOP-Catholic lovefest???
All of that time the GOP has spent publicizing the many ways in which their agenda aligns with the cultural conservatism of the Catholic heirarchy!!!

And ironically, Hillary was one of the first ones to grab the sledgehammer and pound away on that wedge!

Now, the Catholics who trend GOP are the ones who actually GO TO CHURCH every week, as opposed to the "cafeteria Catholics" or the Holy Day of Obligation pew warmers.

So, who are they gonna listen to? Rep. King, or the hierarchy? What a conundrum!!!!

8. WOW!
A few years ago Peter King pissed me off mightily by smugly agreeing with Chris Matthews that Catholics were more moral than everyone else. I guess that view is inoperative now.

He says that he supports the bill to reduce MBTA's, then he votes for it. He's a bullshiter.

13. Gee, it really bothers me
From what I have read on demographic breakdowns in 2004, much of the Catholic vote went to bush. It is especially ironic since certain chruches were actually telling their congregations to vote against John Kerry because of his position on abortion

Now they are getting bit by making a bargin with the devil

Of course my generalization is NOT particularly relevent. Everyone forgets what happened during the reagen administration in El Salvador, when the death squads killed Romero, and three nuns, and how Jean Kirpatrick, who was UN ambassador under Reagen made the comment as though to justify the killings, that they were more than religious people, they were "political activists", as though that justified what happened. Same republican party, same stupid people voting for them

I agree with the church though, and it doesn't surprise me that they are taking the approach that is in opposition to King's bill.

Again though the Catholic Church's friendly policy on immigrants doesn't surprise me on account of the fact that a lot of immigrants are Catholic and the church is on the correct side of I guess you could it social justice issues like this.

24. I wish more people would show this thread some love
People need to be able to seperate their disgust over the pedophilia scandal and anger over some bishops' opposition to Kerry in 2004 and recognize that this is a situation where the Church is on the right side of an issue and especially that this jackass needs to be exposed and stopped.

30. But yet - he is amazingly SILENT when it comes to pedophile priests!
Edited on Sun Mar-26-06 01:40 PM by TankLV
Until NOW?

Yeah I'll trust this SOB REPUKE on his "sincerity".

Yeah - I'll get upset when about THIS issue when HE starts going after HIS church for their coddling and HIDING of PEDOPHILE PRIESTS, other than to use it as a wedge issue for his xenophobia.

Until then, I've got more important concerns to worry about.

Sorry.

Not gonna bite.

The Catholic Church is a hateful, bigoted, DANGEROUS organization that would sooner have me KILLED simply for being gay.

That OVERRIDES any good they have done in MY book.

Let them rot in their own Kharma.

32. I disagree with the Church
concerning the marriage thing and law and such but haven't seen any decrees about killing gays. While the Church's position is a form of hate, many churches in the US share that idea. To single out the Catholic Church because of their stands on marriage and contraceptives, you ignore other dangerous religious influences around you that may get you and they even may share your hatred of the Catholic church. Hate begets hate I guess.
