be transferred to an aid. The phone was never answered. I am outraged. We pay the salaries for these idiots. We now cannot even get a phone answered. I have never in my 63 years been so upset about politics. AND I am sick of hearing the senators thank each and pat each other on the back. This is a farce. Senator Feingold deserves far greater respect than he is being given. Where is Kerry, by the way. If I try his office, will they answer the phone?

30. Got through to Durbin's office - long wait on hold
He is "meeting with constituents" today.

I mentioned (nicely) that he has not come out publicly in support or against this, so wouldn't it have made sense for him to make room in his schedule for this hearing, so he would have the opportunity to ask questions and get some answers.

The poor man stuttered that he would pass that comment along.

Sigh. I don't have a good feeling about this.

What is being exposed is the radical view that Congress cannot check the presidents power in a case of war.

Considering that this war has no end. Therefor; Congress cannot limit the presidents power in the near future!

Lindsey Graham defending The Huston Plan, can't remember history, huh ?

More on martial law and the Huston Plan

""Huston Plan

In June of 1970, during the wave of domestic protest centered around the war in Vietnam, President Nixon approved a set of recommendations known as the Huston Plan. This plan called for various agencies of government, including the CIA, FBI, and military intelligence agencies, to conduct wide-ranging intelligence-gathering activities targeted toward dissident groups and individuals. Most of these activities violated basic civil liberties. The President revoked the plan 5 days later, though some of its recommendations continued to be carried out. Volume 2 consists of hearings followed by a lengthy set of document exhibits. Witnesses included Tom Charles Huston, the author of the plan, former CIA counterintelligence head James Angleton, and former Assistant Director of the FBI Charles Brennan.""

76. Does it seem, to anyone but me, that the Dem party really doesn't CARE
what WE think? It appears that they will do whatever the hell they want to do and then turn around and think we will forgive and forget and keep dishing out our money to them. I'm done. They will not get ONE CENT from me. I'm taking notes and names and NO ONE on my list will get one freakin' penny from me. They are now COMPLICIT in the DESTRUCTION OF OUR CONSTITUTION! The LEAST they could do is show up for this fucking hearing! What's the skin off their nose for showing up? NOTHING. Shame on them!

84. Oh, they Care...
they care that we send them money, canvas for them, gather signatures for them, pass on their arguments.

Then they kiss the ass of the ever-elusive "swing-voter" because we are a given. I have accepted my place by now.

90. I keep wondering..
.... just how long it's going to take the rest of the people here to figure this out.

THE DEMS AREN'T GOING TO DO ANYTHING.

I don't pretend to know the real reason, but I've seen this scenario play out over and over and over and over and over. Those of you with all the excuses can forgettaboutit.

I'm just not hearing them any more.

77. An underlying pattern to dem approach to issues?
Seems to me that dem leaders take turns handling major issues. It might be Conyers taking on election reform, then Boxer taking on delegate challenges, then Kennedy for something else, then Byrd. Waxman = WMD. Someone different on DSM. Clinton was body armor (and steroids for some reason). Conyers did NSA spying for a time. Feingold is doing censure.

You don't see them take the risk all together; there's always one who gets out the message and the others stay in the background. While I definitely don't like the approach, I'm trying to understand if there's a method to the madness. With more research and checking the pattern might be more clear, but on the surface this does seem to be a trend. If a strategy, is it more effective than banding together in support of opposition and to help frame issues?

I don't know (won't know till nov 2006), but I do look at the GOP and see that they've gone 180 the other way and that has worked pretty damn well from a PR standpoint.

So...is Feingold actually doing this WITH the blessing of Reid? Is it his job to raise the topic but allow other dems to take more moderate positions?

At least he's off the Watergate Schtick, after getting his ass kicked. Still showing his ignorance, er. the timing of when FISA law was passed. What an idiot.

83. On the absence of senators at the hearing...
Some have got their marching orders from the Nixon loyalists in the WH to stay away -- less senators means less talking time for Dean;

I suspect some have been strongarmed to stay away.

I am just livid by ANY senator's absence at this important debate.

In any case, their absence speaks volumes about John Dean's power as a legal intellect.
