It is not about immigration it is about Labor vs Capital
Labor is being created as a circuit for capital and that is applying to your fear and arguments.
Pitting all labor, and all immigrates including yourself, which you are, on a jingoistic philosophy of us vs them.
The control of Labor and the borders has been in controlled by the capitalist, neglect was not an accident, just as the Katrina response was not an accident. The consolidation of wealth of this nation is in the hands of the fewer and growing into the few, just as in Mexico.
which has been in a rapid growth since the republicans came to power,
then the illusion of the middle class medocracy of constant denial on the events that are occurring before their eyes.
Will make them attack the wrong side on this story.

When Us vs them is really this:

Historical materialism starts with the assumption that human consciousness is conditioned by its physical environment,
and therefore that primacy in society flows from its material base to its organisation of social life.
At the core lie the 'forces of production' (predominately machinery, raw materials, labour power, and knowledge), that influence the 'relations of production', i.e. the composition of ownership in society.
The class that dominates the relations of production favour a certain legal, political and ideological constitution of society (superstructure) that will support their social order.
But because the forces of production develop continuously,
while the established order tends to conserve its position
the organisation of society will increasingly become at odds with its material production.
A point is reached when the old establishment fetters the emerging productive forces.
The struggle between the ruling class and those classes it submerged
(which has been ongoing) now burst into revolutionary change.

A rapid growth of capital is synonymous with a rapid growth of profits.
Profits can grow rapidly only when the price of labor – the relative wages – decrease just as rapidly. Relative wages may fall, although real wages rise simultaneously with nominal wages, with the money value of labor, provided only that the real wage does not rise in the same proportion as the profit. If, for instance, in good business years wages rise 5 per cent, while profits rise 30 per cent, the proportional, the relative wage has not increased, but decreased.

If, therefore, the income of the worker increased with the rapid growth of capital, there is at the same time a widening of the social chasm that divides the worker from the capitalist, and increase in the power of capital over labor, a greater dependence of labor upon capital.

So I just wanted to make you think about our world's literature and thoughts and history.

rambling Friday night rant.

3. Yep.
Corporatism is the name of the game. Much easier than dealing with countries and the working class.

5. LOL, you said what I should have said in one sentence.
Unfettered capitalism is a mob rule by the minority.
Praise NAFTA.

2. This is the most civilized rant I've read on the subject.
Labor really needs to unify all workers and force the corporations to do the right thing by labor instead of blaming the poorest of the workers for their problems. I'm sure the CEOs are all laughing to the bank and no one is making them accountable for the problem they have created.

6. Thank you
It seems we need to read our history books again
To see why they manned the barricades in 1848 throughout Europe.
Which brought a begging of democracy to europe.

Europe, at least, outlawed slavery before we did.

9. Global Migration of Capital
is the phrase I keep thinking of reading the Immigration threads. WTO, GATT, NAFTA, CAFTA etc. are all instruments for allowing Capital to migrate unfettered all over the world. It seizes and abandons domestic and international markets at will, often with devastating social, environmental and economic impacts. The developed nation states enforce so called "free market" policies with every economic, political and military tool at their disposal to serve Capital's global interest. Capital knows no boarders.

If we think of Labor as all workers (documented or undocumented, organized or unorganized, domestic or international, participating in formal or informal economies)it must react to the Migration of Capital. Crossing national boarders once Capital has moved on to cheaper, less regulated, more profitable areas (read from Mexico to China)seems Labor's best option.

10. So encouraging to see this OP and also nonconformist's thread
on the subject today. At last some really good summarizing of the issues that actually do move us toward some productive responses!

Another point that has occurred to me: It seems like it's taken 11 MILLION illegal immigrants to push the problem to a level where it is affecting a majority of people now, and I think THAT is why we're hearing the public outcry about the problem.

A good friend of mine living in Wisconsin was just released from prison after serving 29 years on a wrongful conviction, and so far he's found that the only jobs he can get are working alongside illegals, where few background questions (if any) are asked. What stunned me about this is that there's a problem with Latino illegal workers in WISCONSIN!

And there is one other question that has been driving me crazy -- maybe someone here can offer an answer that provides some clarification?

Many of us seem to agree that a "rising up" of the people, the common man and woman, the Americans who "work for a living," is needed to stop the corporatist takeover in our country. What I have a hard time doing is visualizing just what that would look like. I'm usually very imaginative and have no problem doing something like that; but the dire straits my beloved country is deeply into these days has made it difficult for me to picture just HOW we can do that "rising up," how we can accomplish a real "revolution"... and therefore what it would LOOK LIKE.

Can anyone help me?

K&R, btw.

And edited to add emphasis and try to be more clear. (I've always sorta wondered why most DUers bother to explain their reason for editing, also. Is there inherently something negative about honing a post? ;))
