We won't need a yellow star.

The color of our skin will mark us as suspects, as felons, as threats to "the homeland." Any cop will be free to stop us at any time, under any pretext, to check -- not for dope -- but for our “papers.”

At first it won't seem like much. Quietly, at first, a few of us will begin to disappear, just like some 60 thousand immigrants of Muslim and Arabic descent have disappeared since the onset of the Patriot Act; without a word. Like them, we will become targets of the so-called “war on terror.”

First it will be dozens, then hundreds, then thousands, then tens of thousands.

Mothers will disappear walking to the corner store. Fathers will never come home from work. Children will be left behind, sobbing in apartments empty of food, warmth, money and life. The neighbors will be afraid. The tens of thousands could readily become millions.

The picture painted above is nothing but hard headed realism. Legislation now before the US Senate would make every undocumented person in the US a felon and authorize every police department in the country to arrest people on immigration charges. snip

This is the pretext. They call us "invaders." We represent a "destabilizing factor" for the "nation." They say we are dirty, just like they said the Jews were dirty -- and disease ridden.


The last paragraph is true as hell. Lou Dobbs did a segment the other day about some Mexicans who had Tuberculosis like that has something to do with undocumented workers. Lou Dobbs is a real prick.

1. Scary, NNNOLHI. Now what is to be done about Mexico's feudal economy?

With 10% of her population leaving for the US, isn't Mexico a failed state?

Mexico's backward, feudal economy is to blame.

Racism is terrible. But so is feudalism.

2. I'd really like to see

some evidence about 60,000 people having been 'disappeared' since the Patriot Act became law. I haven't heard the ACLU make this claim, or any of the liberal legislators. There's no way that the legislation proposing that illegal immigrants be designated as felons will become law. Even in the House, Sensenbrenner tried to change it to a misdemeanor. (I totally oppose that, of course) The dems blocked it as a tactical move. New polls show that there's overwhelming support for a guest worker program. Even bushco opposes criminalizing illegal immigrants. This is just another variation on scare tactics.

UNTIL recently, Fuad Hassan Ismail lived an ordinary life. His days were simple: He awoke early, ate a quick breakfast, and drove to the Seattle Yacht Club, where he performed janitorial and security work and helped with the landscaping. Born in Yemen to parents of Somali origin, Ismail was not an American citizen but had lived in the United States nearly half his life and had permission to work here. By all accounts, he was a model employee at the yacht club. He was well-liked and had never missed a shift since landing his job there in 1999. "I was working, paying taxes, saving money for a house," says Ismail, 41. "I was just like everybody else."

Like everybody else except that owing to a former drug habit, he had been classified by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) as a criminal alien and was therefore subject to deportation whenever the authorities saw fit.

And early last month, on a cool and cloudy Friday morning, Ismail was putting in a regular shift at the yacht club when three INS agents approached.

"I was in the parking lot, and they came up to me with a warrant and arrested me," Ismail says. "The club's general manager came outside to try and help me. But they took me away and put me in a detention facility. They wouldn't tell me why. The next day, they said they were deporting me to Mogadishu. Mogadishu? I couldn't believe it. I'd never even been to Mogadishu."
