Last week Sgt. 1st Class Jason L. Bishop, 31, of Williamstown, Ky., was killed. The soldiers talked about the media coverage of his death, and they couldn't understand why his life was not as important as his death in the news reports.

Why does America seem so fascinated with the death of soldiers, they asked. They are at war, and soldiers at war die.

The soldiers carry green books to take notes. They are government issued journals with white-lined pages. Bishop had written a letter to his infant son on some of the pages, and the soldiers in Iraq wanted to ensure his wife got the book.

That's what the people at home need to know, they said.

1. Thanks for the post. We don't see too many like this.

Things sure are different today than in our little conflict back in my time.

The only news we got was from guys coming back from leave or R&R.

2. I have mixed feelings about the embedded reporter business.

On the one hand I want to know what is going on and how are kids are doing but on the other hand I am such a cynic these days that I never know if I can believe what I am reading. :(

3. And if China invaded & occupied the USA, we'd all inderstand that

the Chinese soldiers were writing letters home to their children and passing out toys to US kids....never mind about the bombs dropped onto the wrong American homes, killing sleeping American women & children, we'd UNDERSTAND.

4. ALL embedded reporters are selectively chosen by the Pentagon

71 reporters/journalists have been killed...anyone have a clue to how many were accidently killed by US. troops??
