Meredith Viera (Couric's replacement) "Iraq war was built on lies"
This RW site presents it as a bad thing, but she's just stating the obvious...

Meredith Vieira, the widely presumed replacement for Katie Couric as co-host of NBC's Today this fall -- Wednesday's New York Times reported that “NBC has nearly concluded an agreement with Meredith Vieira of ABC to replace Ms. Couric as co-host of the Today morning show” -- marched in an anti-Iraq war protest back in August of 2004. On the Monday, August 30, 2004 edition of the ABC daytime show she quad-hosts, The View, the former CBS 60 Minutes reporter told viewers that she attended the Sunday anti-Bush protest held in New York City on the day before the Republican convention opened, insisting: "I didn't go anti-Bush or pro-Kerry. I'm still so upset about this war and I'm so proud I live in a country where you can protest." She showed a photo of herself marching with her pre-teen daughter and her husband, Richard, who was the senior political producer at CBS News for most of the 1980s. Behind her in the photo: A protest sign featuring a “W” with a slash through it.

Earlier in 2004, she declared of the Iraq war: "Everything's been built on lies. Everything! I mean the entire pre-text for war." And, with war impending in March of 2003, Vieira argued that anti-war protests "should be consistent and repeated every day, I believe." On other episodes of The View Vieira has also made clear her opposition to the death penalty and when guest Ann Coulter charged that “liberals hate America,” Vieira called that “stupid" and became defensive: “But some people wrap themselves in the flag -- I mean, that's what some liberals are against.” Then she charged: "Just like McCarthy: 'I'm just being patriotic.'"

4. I wish they would pick Ann Curry.
But Vieira is a good choice, as well.

7. Good to know. When I used to sometimes watch The View, the thing I

noticed was how much she hated the Clintons.

She seemed to be an Independent. Joy and Starr are Democrats. The blond survivor chick is a raving RW Bushbot. Baba Wawa is mush and Meridith's main political affiliation seemed to be pissed off at the Clintons but otherwise could go either way.

That is just what I remember.

She is funny and quirky as hell.

She would be a good fit for Today.

She does have real journalistic credentials but gave it up when she was having her babies, now big kids.

8. What's her background?
I know she does stuff on The View, but does she have any journalism credentials behind her? I know morning TV is a bit fluffier, but she needs the creds too. Anyone know?

"Prior to her various hosting duties, she first came to national recognition as a CBS reporter and correspondent for news magazine shows such as West 57th and 60 Minutes. She moved to ABC initially as a news journalist, but made the career switch when, as she recalls:

Once I realized I was a reporter who didn't want to report because it required a tremendous amount of travel, nobody was too interested in having me work for them. I had to reinvent myself.
Vieira began her career in 1975 as a news announcer for WORC radio in Worcester, Massachusetts, after graduating magna cum laude from Tufts University. She eventually made her way to the newsroom at WCBS-TV, her eventual springboard to the network level.

She and her husband, journalist Richard Cohen, and their three children, Ben, Lily, and Gabe, currently reside in Westchester.

Richard Cohen has had multiple sclerosis for many years (including prior to their marriage), and has also recently had two colon-cancer surgeries."

11. Just before or after the War on Iraq
started, Viera was pissing and moaning on The View that her son was being picked on by the other kids because they werew all against what was going whereas he was a supporter. Methinks as he has gotten closer to the age where he could "suit up and get in the game" they have probably both changed their "View". It seemed like so much more fun when it was going to be a "cakewalk".
