I have a (very simplistic) idea about homophobia |
|
Mostly against gay men. It occured to me the other night that being as so many homophobic men are big "Real Men Love Jesus" types, there's probably some link there. "I'm a man, I love Jesus...holy shit, does that make me gay?! No, I'm not gay! I love Jesus but I'm not gay! In fact, I'm *so* not gay that I HATE gay people! Ha, so THERE!"
Makes sense to me.

A man can say he loves his son, and we all know he doesn't mean he loves his son, right? It's probably not any different when a man says he loves Jesus.
I certainly wouldn't interpret a gay man saying he loves Jesus Christ as meaning he wants to have sex with Him.

They are uncomfortable because they ave gay fantasies. People who are secure in their sexuality are not afraid and they know that someone who is gay will not influence others to be gay unless the "others" are already gay.
There is, as always, nothing to fear but fear itself!

6. It's much more simple than that. |
|
"If I'm not better than somebody, then who am I better than?"
-or-
"I don't like it, and the world owes it to me to shield me from things I don't like."

7. My husband says it has to do with a warped definition of "man" |
|
in our culture. Men are encouraged to not show all their feelings, not hug or touch (other than shake hands). But primates are a species that thrives on touch. And it is human to feel not only anger but sadness, love, etc, and to express these feelings. When men succumb to these very human feelings, they think of them as "not manly" and some think the feelings are "gay". They can't stand thinking they might be "less than men" and freak out over the very natural feeling of wanting to touch and hug other men. So they overreact and become homophobes.
