6. He wasn't all that much of a genius

He would tell the captain it would take four hours to fix the engines when he knew he could do it in 20 minutes. He'd do the work take an hour to relax with a bottle of scotch (or maybe a woman of Scotch heritage) and then report back, whereupon he was hailed as an engineering genius for doing in one hour what would have taken five.

He even admitted as much on an appearance in ST:TNG :rofl:
