Can we just rewrite the Constitution? |
|
Here in Alabama, there is a movement to rewrite the State Constitution, doing away with archaic laws and making it so it better fits in this day and age. When Democrats take back the House, Senate and White House I propose we rewrite the Constitution so there is no doubt what the law of the land will be.
For example, under the same Constitution abortion was illegal, is now legal, but will probably be illegal again if Bush gets his way. Yet the Constitution has not changed. Let us rewrite it so the laws are plain and easily read so there is no debate.

4. How do you propose to "get rid of guns"? |
|
And if you ditch the 2ndA and outlaw guns, what other Amendments would you ditch in order to enforce the new gun-confiscation crusade, and the all-out civil war that doing so would inevitably ignite? The Fourth Amendment would have to go...probably the Fifth...let's not go there.
You are aware that between a quarter and a third of Dems own guns, yes? And at least that many independents? Only about 50% of gun owners are repubs...

2. Assuming, of course, that we're the ones with the majority |

when the writing is being done. If we're not, what do you think would happen to the First, Fourth and Fifth Amendments (to name a few)?
Vague as it may be at times, I think we should leave the Constitution as is.

3. There is a procedure to do so. |
|
It's called a constitutional convention. We can certainly try that.
But the White House, the Senate, and the House together can't just "rewrite" it. Otherwise, what's to prevent the Republicans from changing it NOW. While they are still in power.

Just ignore the parts you don't like and when you get called on it, change the laws. It's easy!
