Update concerning the Scalia incedent.... |
|
Ok, I haven't gotten in any trouble yet, but something might happen tomorrow, because I have class with the professor who helped in organizing the meeting with Scalia, but didn't actually go on the trip, and I'm sure the professor who did go on the trip has told the other professors in the Political Science Department what happened. And to make matters somewhat worse, the professor that helped in organizing the meeting but didn't go on the trip, is also the chair of the Political Science, and told me to my face a couple of times "not to make the school look bad" on the trip, because she knows that I'm not a fan of Scalia's. So I just wanted to update everyone what has happened so far, expect another update from me in a couple of days.

4. "Not make your school look bad"?! Hell, you were a credit to your |
|
school by showing intellectual integrity, a devotion to academic research, and the demonstration of a critical mind coupled with an informed citizenry. You should be offered some kind of academic award and recognition. What you did takes guts. If Caroline Kennedy's Profile in Courage awards are offered to non-public citizens, you should definitely be nominated.

6. As an American, you have a right to ask questions. Remember that. |
|
Just because the question may put someone on the spot, or because it may not be a popular one is beside the point. America is a nation based on laws, ethics, accountability, and trust. As an American you have a right to question those who are charged with defending and protecting the Constitution, including Supreme Court Justices.
Be proud of what you did, and know that you represent the majority now. Most Americans are fed up with the abuse being forced upon us.
I'll be sending good thoughts your way.

7. What kind of law school would punish a student for exercising |
|
first amendment rights? If they even hint at some kind of disciplinary action you should threaten to sue their pants off.

mal-mis-administration. We just have to keep chipping away in the end we win. By now I think cooler heads will prevail and not a word will be spoken to you. Their silence will be their telling you, you done well girl.

11. I don't think it is you who is making your school look bad |
|
Scalia is the one whose got the problem. He's the one that acted like an arrogant ass. He believes because he is a high and mighty SC Justice who is above being questioned.
This is not the first time Scalia has blown up in public. Has a matter of fact it is becoming a pattern of behavior. You might want to point that out, these other instances where Scalia has gone nuts over being questioned and even got caught on camera flipping someone off.
You on the other hand remained calm and civil. Hold your head up and be proud. You handled yourself well and we all have a right to know the answers to your questions.

you asked a very, very good question! One that you and your classmates may have to answer for yourselves one day. To get a Supreme Court Justice's thoughts on recusing oneself could have been, in a perfect world and with someone less asshole-ish than Scalia, a great opportunity to gain some insight. If your Prof does reprimand you, defend yourself with calmness, clarity and facts. Should that fail, then wear your whatever "punishment" he gives out proudly. Speaking Truth to Power sometimes earns a "bruise" or two. But you know what they say about sticks and stones. I don't even think THOSE can hurt someone as smart and brave as you. :-) And you're gonna make a damn fine lawyer someday.

You don't know yet where this will lead, and you may need documentation down the line.
Good Luck!

14. You're At A State University, Aren't You? |
|
If so, then you might want to keep this in mind.
No State can take away your right to Free Speech.
If you suffer any retaliation at all -- ANY retaliation at all -- you might want to consider getting an attorney. Because any retaliation, it seems to me, would be equivalent to the State of New York (who employs the professors) restricting your freedom to speak.

|
good. all she told you was to not make the school look bad, hence, nothing stupid, seeing it is all about academics. well, you were incredibly informed all ducks in a row, so in essence you made the school shine. a wonderful example of what the school is putting out.

shove it in their faces and tell them there's a whole bunch of your fellow citizens who think you are a grade A, Class 1 HERO deserving approbation and a frickin medal, not a lecture on decorum from gutless, winy ass, suck-holes to power.

There's an article floating around DU somewhere about Scalia's response. I don't have a star either, or I'd find it for you. :hi:

24. You asked GREAT questions |
|
If they hadn't been great questions, he could have answered them. All he did was his usual bullying and attacking of the questioner and you had done your homework and knew he had enormous conflict problems and instead of him trying to explain them, he just freaked.
You did NOTHING wrong. I wish to gawd the media would ask him such basic, important, critical questions.
I thank you for asking the questions.
I thank you for standing up to his Holiness and shining a little truth on this "justice"
I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Your professor should be glad to have a student such as you.
