Thuggie Priests in India arrested for cannalbalism of a child's corpse
I didn't like the original Australian news title release but it did catch my eye

Priests arrested for cannibalism

TWO Hindu priests were arrested on charges of eating vital organs from the corpse of a child in the belief they would gain supernatural powers, Indian police said today.

"Our investigations revealed the pair exhumed the body on Friday and after lopping off its head they devoured its heart, liver and other soft organs, thinking the act would give them with immense powers," Jaunpur police chief Abhay Kumar Prasad said.
"We have also found the half-eaten headless corpse after interrogating these two men," Mr Prasad said.

Villagers alerted police yesterday after finding the head of an 18-month-old infant they had buried three days previously.
Brijvasi Mishra, aged 53, and his student Vishal Misra, 23, were caught in northern Uttar Pradesh state's Jaunpur district.

The priests follow an ancient Hindu cult which once permitted cannibalism and the use of human corpses in various rituals. It was first banned in the 18th century when India was a British colony.>>>>snip http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,18779041-1702,00.html?from=rss

Wikipedia:
The thuggee religion was allegedly a cult with both Hindu and Muslim members who practiced large-scale robbery and murder of travellers by strangulation. Induction was typically passed from father to son, with the women of the household being kept ignorant of the cult's activities.
Both of the factions into which the Thuggee belonged were divided by the Nerbudda river. Also, both Thuggee factions laid claim to antiquity. While members of the northern faction , however, did not trace their origin further back than the period of the early Muslim kings of Delhi, members of the southern faction not only claimed an earlier and purer descent, but adhered also with greater strictness to the rules of their profession.
The earliest authenticated mention of the Thugs is found in the following passage of Ziau-d din Barni's History of Firoz Shah (written about 1356):

According to the Guinness Book of Records the Thuggee cult was responsible for approximately 2,000,000 deaths. Gang leader Behram (or Burham) has often been considered to be the world's most prolific serial killer with 931 killings between 1790 and 1830 attributed to him. Reference to contemporary manuscript sources, however, shows that Behram actually gave inconsistent statements regarding the number of murders he had committed, and that while he did state that he had "been present at" more than 930 killings committed by his gang of 25-50 men, elsewhere he admitted that he had personally strangled no more than 125 people. Having turned King's Evidence and agreed to inform on his former companions, furthermore, Behram never stood trial for any of the killings attributed to him, the total of which must thus remain a matter of dispute .

6. religious people do a lot of things that others might find "freakish"
don't get me wrong; I find the consumption of human flesh unbelievably disgusting. (I think I am on my way to becoming a vegan, for that matter, but that's off topic--)

I was poking fun at your question: "What's wrong with these freaks?"

That could be asked of so many people---I think that when I look at the current administration.

I think that when I watch grown men club harmless little tiny seals.

I think that when I see the photos of pigs chained up in little tiny spaces.

I think that when I see the mean looking people that have somehow deputized themselves to patrol borders.

Somehow...as weird and freaky as these religious people are that are pulling up corpses and eating them....really...what are they hurting? The people they are eating are dead--they don't care.

I would rather lose sleep over the living.

3. About 5 years back Burger King was selling chicken nuggets shaped
like the Rugrats. So children could order up a cardboard cup full of deep fried human babies and dip their little heads in sweet and sour, barbeque or honey mustard sauce. If any of the kids that ate the Rugrats wound up joining this Thuggie cult...they should say it is because of the Burger King promo. -Jack Handy (well me actually)
