Could the world-wide conservative movement be ending?
With the exception of Canada (which I believe that Steven Harper will be a one termer if there isn't a vote of no confidence earlier), the conservatives seem to be losing world wide.

Italy's PM's party lost
Poland's PM's party lost

Vincente Fox is tanking.
Bush is tanking.

Israel has a centrist PM.

Spain's Bush supporting PM's party lost.
Tony Blair (though a labour party PM) has lost most of his support.

Meanwhile, people like Hugo Chavez are enjoying extremely high popularity ratings.

Could the conservative movement be crashing and burning?

1. The pendulum never stops swinging
It never has stopped in the past. There is no concrete reason to believe it will ever end.

2. Is/was there a world-wide conservative movement?
"Conservative" is a relative term.

3. Jose Maria Aznar was ousted in Spain for entering the war in Iraq
He paid the price for ignoring the vast majority of his people, and the Spanish people paid the price in blood for his stupidity.

4. Bushco
More reason to feat that Bushco will try something daring and risky in an effort to avoid the inevitable.

5. it already succeeded
In Britain the conservatives (big and small c) in the 80s moved the entire politcal spectrum to the right, and so instead of left and right we have right of centre and the right. Everyone now plays by the rules laid by thatcher, she even declared the country was in safe hands following blair's 97 victory (and there is no point saying blair is losing his support - whoever follows him will be exactly the same)

so no, conservatives aren't crashing and burning. there may be small swings back to the centre, but the political landscape is overwhelmingly conservative and will be for some time unless something drastic changes.

10. That's a very good point.
The State department has identified the biggest growing economies. There are about 13 countries which are considered to be THE countries you want to do business with. The BEM's....the Big Emerging Markets.. India and China among others.

Their growth rates are enormous, whereas the U.S. and Europe are basically flat.

They are eye-witnesses to a hegemonic Empire.....on its way down....

14. you are correct to some degree
however, the prevailing political climate in the west is firmly on the right. in britain you wont find many politicians talking about nationalisation, and privatisation is all steam ahead in institutions such as the NHS and also in schools with that dreadful PFI ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PFI )

bones are thrown to the left with things like the national minimum wage (not a bad idea in itself, but a national maximum wage would be much more helpful) but the majority of government policies are pro big business and anti working class.

11. I can't speak for the rest of the world
But in America, the "conservative movement" will be remembered as but a blip on the radar screen. Compare the presidencies of W and Clinton. and the people will turn back to the Democrats in droves. The actions of Bush, Libby, Cheney, DeLay, etc. will make many people never want to vote for the GOP again.

13. Tony Blair has paid the price for cozying up to Boosh.

And he continues to pay. The fallout for Blair and his cronies continues.

Too bad someone couldn't have told Blair early on that he was consorting with a genuine asshole.
