Why don't the post counts of some ever increment?
Edited on Wed Apr-12-06 02:35 PM by harlinchi
I was searching for the previous posts of one with whom I disagreed on a topic to see if I could glean some insight into their point of view (it sux when I'm wrong -- I found way more with which I agreed than the reverse) when I noticed that the count listed for that poster on each topic has the same number. On at least four different threads, this poster had the same count. Does anyone know why?

BTW, I obviously am not very clear in my posts; I engender so much disagreement. Good thing I looked for this person's other posts -- it kinda shows that maybe I was the one who was wrong. Naaah!

1. The person's current post count is always shown
regardless of the age of the post.

2. The number of posts listed is the accrued number of posts up to the
minute.

Sometimes you'll see a post that says the poster has 20 posts, but the response to it will say something like "Not bad for your first post. Welcome to DU!"

When that post was posted, it said one post, but now all posts from that DUer shows the latest number of posts for that person.

11. It's the same with your Avatar and Sig Line.
I've had two or three Avatars, but if you go back and look at a long-ago post from me, it will have today's puppy picture.

BTW, hat puppy just turned one year old. They are a lot bigger now. :)

3. the post count displayed whenever a page loads is the current...

...post count. The info for individual posts isn't saved somewhere-- rather, the post count is read from the user's profile as the page loads each time.

4. Your post count on a post does not show the count at the time of your post
it shows your count NOW. In other words, when your post count is 50, it will show as 50 on every single post. Does that make sense?

5. each time he posts, his post count in his profile increases
post count isn't specific to each post - it's tied to the poster and not the post...if that makes sense.

7. If I understand you correctly
the post count number is automatically updated throughout the forum. Everytime someone makes a post their number goes up on all their posts. In other words, the post count number is always current. At least that's how I have figured.

12. it's updated each time you load a page....
It's not stored "throughout the forum" at all. It's updated from the user profile whenever you load a page.

17. I'm sorry, it's not "updated throughout the forum" when you post....
Edited on Wed Apr-12-06 04:28 PM by mike_c
The only thing that's updated is your profile. If someone has a page open and you have a post count of 100, when you post another reply they don't see your post count increase to 101 because it isn't "updated" in their version of that page. YOU will see it increase because the act of posting your reply reloads the page you're reading. THEY don't see the increase until they refresh the page themselves and the new postcount is read from your profile. The information is not spread around "throughout the forum," it exists only in your profile, from which it is retrieved whenever a user loads a page from DU.

on edit: I think now that we're saying the same thing, maybe just having trouble communicating(?).

19. The OP appeared to be asking about numbers (not the 1000+)
Edited on Wed Apr-12-06 05:25 PM by Mabus
Therefore my answer was geared towards that aim. I don't recall that the OP asked how to see the total number of posts that a poster has made or I would have referred them to check the poster's individual profile. Since the word "number" was referenced I assumed it was a number other than "1000+".

While I think we are saying similiar things, I was focused on answering the question as I understood the OP. This was based on my understanding of the OP's specific question as to post count, i.e. "I noticed that the count listed for that poster on each topic has the same number" not "I noticed that the count listed for that poster on each topic is 1000+".

on edit: The post count changes each time a new post is made until the poster reaches 1,000. After that milestone has been reached the post count then is displayed as "1000+" on the forum but the number increases correspondingly in the poster's profile unless the profile has been disabled.
