In praise of librarians
For fighting against attempts to restrict access to information;
For striving to keep that information free and accessible to all;
For being on the front line against aggressive attempts through legislation and intimidation to repress people's ability to acquire knowledge;
For the many times, both reported and quiet, that they have made a stand against censorship of resources;
For the dignity, grace and thoughtfulness they bring to this important battle for the right to intellectual pursuit;

I thank you.

5. Wish I was a better artist
I'd love to create a sculpture of a librarian holding a globe of radiating light in one hand and an open book in the other.

6. That would be so cool--and so appropriate.
Maybe some artistically gifted DUer could take up the challenge!

2. If the nation is restored to greatness, it will be, in no small part,
due to the patriots who have stuck their necks out to protect the ability for the public to gather necessary information. They took the lead against the Patriot Act attack on Americans.

3. I'm so proud of all the librarians
who have fought for us in this regard and I agree with you completely.
They have fought for our freedom as courageously as any soldier on a battlefield and I deeply appreciate it.

4. Librarians are fierce protectors of the Constitution
It's a shame they can't drum Laura Bush out of the corps!

8. ...and in my experience, libarians have the best recipes.
Never pass up an invitation to a social function sponsored by librarians! You'll thank me for this advice.:)

9. As a librarian I must say...aw shucks.
I've never been in a position to face down the authorities over someone's privacy rights and I hope I never end up in that position but it's nice to know there's some support out there.

10. the librarian action figure!
Okay, it's kind of corny (most librarians I know are not inclined to run around shushing people). But the likeness is supposedly based on Nancy Pearl (a real librarian in Seattle), whose real-life biography sounds way cool.

13. Be There, Be Vocal
May 1 & 2 librarians from across the country gather in DC for National Library Legislative Day. You would be proud of their determination, diligence and fortitude. During briefings on May 1st, they study the issues and practice talking points. Then state delegations prepare their messages. May 2nd everyone walks the hill meeting representatives and senators. Meetings are often combative. My sec. of state attends in support and has walked out angrily from meetings with a RW dress model. Be there. Go watch our countries true patriots in action. I'll be there.
