US Airways reaches labor agreement with maintenance instructors

The Business Journal of Phoenix

US Airways Group Inc.'s maintenance instructors have ratified a new contract with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

The agreement, which covers 40 employees, establishes new wages. The contract runs through 2011.

It is the third agreement the union has reached with US Airways in less than a month.

The carrier recently reached a tentative pact with its 7,700 ramp and baggage-handling employees. That agreement is slated for a ratification vote next week. Mechanics and related employees ratified a new unified contract last month.

US Airways and America West Airlines merged in September 2005, with the combined carrier taking the US Airways name. However, the merged companies were long unable to agree on joint labor contracts for various groups of employees. The carrier hasn't yet resolved an impasse over its pilots' labor agreement.

Meanwhile, the pilots at US Airways recently voted to leave the Air Line Pilots Association and form a separate union.
