Fatal wrecks prompt revocation of labor license

OROSI, Calif.—The U.S. Department of Labor has revoked the license of a farm labor contractor after investigating two wrecks that killed three farmworkers and injured 12 others in 2006.

The announcement Wednesday says that G.V. Farm Labor Service, owned by George L. Valdez of Orosi, also has been assessed $37,200 in fines.

According to the labor department, Valdez failed to ensure that drivers transporting workers had valid licenses and proper insurance, among other things.

One accident near Selma killed three farmworkers and injured five others; another seriously injured seven farmworkers being transported to a peach orchard near Hanford.

Valdez is appealing in an effort to have his license restored.
