4. never heard the Platters do this before--pretty damn impressive
I have a couple of live Joe Ely versions (with Bobby Keys on sax) that are very very hip... ( But I'm WAY too low-tech to know how to post them)

8. My dad used to play the Tennessee Ernie Ford version
when I was but a small child. I never knew what the lyrics meant until much later.

10. My Grandfather "owed his soul to the company store"
In the 1930's. So I knew even as a toddler the meaning.
Grandma made sure of it! That's why I'm an Alabama liberal.

11. I Had a Long-Time Coworker
who grew up in West Virginia. Her father worked for a mining company and they lived in a company town. He was paid in company scrip instead of cash and they shopped in a company store. Those days are not that far away.

13. My dear liberaltrucker!
Well...I've just listened to them...

My favorite?

I have to go with Tennessee Ernie Ford...To me, he's the classic version!

Otherwise, Johnny Cash!

I have to say that the Platters kind of gussied it up a bit too much for me...

Just didn't care for their version...Though their lead singer does have a terrific voice!

Good to see you tonight!

:hi:

19. Just a (hopefully) humorous aside for tonight
"I gulp sixteen brews, what do I get,
a big hangover still in debt".

No, not sixteen. If I did, I wouldn't be able to type!

A couple. OK, a few nips at a local West Memphis, AR bar.

I'm off duty till noon Sunday CST.
