GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — School bus drivers in Mesa County have been collecting signatures to form a union here to seek better pay.

Representatives from the Teamsters Union Local 455 are expected to help collect more signatures once school begins after winter break in January.

School bus drivers for Mesa County Valley School District 51 work for First Student, an international firm whose parent company is based in the United Kingdom.

School bus driver Elaine Harper loves her job, “but $9.75 isn’t enough,” she said Tuesday.

She expressed concern not about herself, but about coworkers who have children and who are struggling financially.

Harper said she’s never been “a real strong union person,” but in certain circumstances, they are needed.
