In the United States there is a huge income inequality that continues to keep working families living in poverty. Here in South Florida that inequality is everywhere you look, it is apparent.

For instance, in Miami there is a private island off South Beach called Fisher Island. The island is gorgeous with plush green palms and stupendous Banyan trees. It is a tropical paradise surrounded by warm inviting ocean and Gulf waters, and as one sits and looks out from this fantasy island, it is impossible to not feel like you are in a postcard, except if you should work there.



Fisher Island, which is the wealthiest community in America, pays its workers as little as $8 an hour; healthcare insurance is out of the question. Now the workers there are standing up to improve their jobs and better their families, they are choosing to unionize with SEIU Local 11.

The University of Miami janitors, who work just due-north northwest of Fisher Island, celebrate their 1 year anniversary victory on June 15th. This date is being held for a rally with – and in support of – the Fisher Island workers. It is the 3rd annual Miami Justice for Janitors Day here in Sunny South Florida.
