Union reaches tentative agreement

July 15, 2007
By STEWART WARREN STAFF WRITER

JOLIET -- There is a tentative labor agreement between members of The American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees Local 1028 and the Will County Board.

There are about 1,200 county employees in the union, among them workers ranging from certified nursing assistants at Sunny Hill Nursing Home and correctional officers at the Will County Jail. They are working under a contract that expired in November, 2006.

The AFSCME members recently voted on the proposed contract, said Mike VanOver, president of the labor organization. "It was ratified by a passing vote by the members that voted on the contract," he said. "(The vote) was tighter than normal because of the correctional officers."

The officers had some concerns about the proposed labor agreement, VanOver said.
