Cement company to lay off 87

Three years ago during a local cement shortage, this company was running 24/7.

LOUISVILLE — A cement plant plans to lay off 87 of its 138 employees four days before Christmas.

Ash Grove Cement Co. is calling the layoffs temporary but has not said when workers might be recalled. Last week, local and state officials gathered as the company celebrated 80 years in Nebraska by dedicating a new 14,000-square-foot office building. The $3.6 million building includes offices, an employee lunchroom, lockers and a conference room.

Use of cement in the United States dropped last year. That decline is expected to continue into next year.

Ash Grove distributes its product in Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota and Kansas.

Ash Grove says it has nine cement plants across the country. Its headquarters is in Overland Park, Kan. — AP

1. Yeah, no one is building anything.
The trades are suffering hard right now.
