Ford, union to resume talks on cost cutting

Ford of Canada and the Canadian Auto Workers will resume formal contract negotiations for concessions later this month.

The union said Thursday that bargaining will restart on Oct. 26 at a downtown hotel to lower labour costs so the automaker can be more competitive.

Talks opened early last month, but recessed after less than two weeks so the two sides could exchange financial information and explore ideas.

CAW president Ken Lewenza revealed the union and company have made little progress in those discussions.

"We're hopeful that we will be able to reach a new agreement with Ford that will suit our members' need for better job security," said Lewenza.
