: “It’s a monumental struggle bein’ watched across Canada, across North America and across the world.”

The United Steel Workers’ Miles Sullivan. Three thousand USW members are in the eighth month of a strike against multinational mining giant Vale Inco in Sudbury, Ontario. Despite having made more than $4 billion profit at its Sudbury nickel mining operations since it took over there, Vale Inco is attacking pension benefits and the bonuses paid to its workers. Sullivan says Vale doesn’t need these concessions but it’s nevertheless ruthlessly pusing for them as it seeks to establish a subservient relationship between the corporation and the USW.

: “They’ve gone right to the heart of the steel workers, right to the heart of our members and picked a fight with some of our most important, precious things that we’ve negotiated over the past decade. And all companies are watching, all workers are watching and we’re not gonna lose this fight.”

Beginning April 5th there will be a global week of action in solidarity with striking USW miners in Sudbury.
