Physical education teacher Matthew Dykstra of the Millard Public Schools received the 2010 Teaching Excellence Award on Saturday at the annual convention of Nebraska's largest teachers union.

Dykstra was praised for integrating technology, music, math and other disciplines into his classes. He will compete for a national teaching award sponsored by the National Education Association that carries a $25,000 prize.

Dykstra and several other award winners were honored at the Horace Mann-Nebraska State Education Association Awards Breakfast.

The breakfast took place during the association's annual delegate assembly at the Cornhusker Hotel in Lincoln.

Rookie of the Year went to Katy Herbold, who works with non-English-speaking students in the South Sioux City schools. Her letter of nomination applauded her “natural” talent and inspiring creativity.

Ann Peterson, secretary at South Sioux City's Cardinal Elementary School, was honored as Education Support Professional of the Year. She was described as “a welcoming spirit” deeply involved at the school.
