FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 14, 2010
Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers and a major voice for school reform, will be a special guest speaker at the City-wide Town Hall on Monday at the Sprint Center, Mayor Mark Funkhouser announced today.

As the outspoken leader of the 1.4-million-member union, Weingarten has been a strong advocate for community schools and for collaboration between school administrators, teachers and government.

“Randi Weingarten is one of the most dynamic voices in education today, and we’re honored that she is making time to speak at our city-wide Town Hall meeting,” Mayor Funkhouser said. “She is an advocate for strong community-based schools, one of the goals our Schools First program.”

Following the Town Hall, Weingarten will host a reception for American Federation of Teachers members in the Perceptive Software Founders Club at Sprint Center.

In both the Town Hall and the session with members, Weingarten will address how collaboration among teachers, schools administrators and the community will be essential as the Kansas City school closing plan is implemented and new reforms are considered.

The 90-minute Town Hall will feature a discussion on developing a better partnership between city government, neighborhoods and schools. During the Town Hall, the city will honor educators, students and neighborhood leaders who, through their actions and efforts, have made a difference in Kansas City.
