Mass firings were down slightly in July. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics 2.3 percent fewer firms let go of 50 or more workers. The decrease still isn’t as sharp in May when mass layoffs hit their lowest point since the start of the recession. Those types of layoff action increased again in June. Overall new applications for unemployment benefits increased by 500,000 last week marking the third increase in a row. The lack of sharp downward movement has economists concerned that the country could head back into the recession before fully pulling out.
