Pennsylvania Unions Turn Out to Help Children

by James Parks, Aug 19, 2007

There’s no question that unions are good for the community, and that’s most obvious when the AFL-CIO’s Community Services Network is on the job, providing services and helping out those in need. An article in a recent edition of the Pittsburgh Catholic showed exactly what the program is all about.

The article begins:

“The smiles on the faces of the children said it all.

“Unions from throughout the state reached out to make the children’s day a little bit brighter by co-sponsoring Auberle’s 21st annual ‘A Festival of Fun’ July 26 on the Auberle campus in McKeesport.”

Union members help teach a new game to children at the Auberle Festival.

Auberle is a faith-based agency dedicated to helping abused, neglected and troubled children and families throughout southwestern Pennsylvania. Some 125 children took part in the festival, which included athletic events, games and a lunch provided by the unions. In addition to children from Auberle, children from organizations such as Family Services of Western Pennsylvania, Holy Family Institute, Turtle Creek Valley Wrap Around Services, Gwen’s Girls, and Art and Soul Capers of the YMCA also participated.

Pennsylvania AFL-CIO President Bill George told reporter John Franko the festival reflects the union movement’s initiative to help communities:

It’s not about PR or anybody putting a feather in their hat. It’s really from the heart.
