11/9/2010
Hyatt hotel workers have filed the first of its kind multi-city injury complaint with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Jesse Russell reports.

The complaint covers 12 Hyatt properties in eight cities. The filing was triggered in part by a study in the American journal of Industrial Medicine that revealed Hyatt housekeepers as having the highest injury rate in the country. Allegedly the chain has raised the room quota and in some cases has doubled the industry standard for number of rooms to be cleaned. The complaint has recommendations for OSHA on ways to make the workload easier for housekeepers and reduce the risks of injury. Some recommendations include caps on daily room quotas, longer handles for mops, fitted sheets to reduce the number of times housekeepers must lift heavy mattresses, and other. The complaints were filed by workers in San Antonio, San Francisco, Chicago, Santa Clara, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Honolulu, and Indianapolis.
