Forest Industrial Relations reaches settlement with USW to end strike

http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/October2007/15/c4200.html

VANCOUVER, Oct. 15 /CNW/ - Forest Industrial Relations (FIR) today announced it has reached an agreement with the United Steelworkers union (USW) to end the current strike.

The agreement is subject to ratification by USW members and FIR member companies. If the settlement is approved, work could resume as early as Oct. 22. The strike began on July 20.

"We recognize that the strike has been a difficult time for everyone and we are pleased that the union has accepted our latest offer," said Terry Lineker, president of FIR.

"We hope to soon get back to the important task of rebuilding the coastal forest products industry for the benefit of both employers and employees." FIR represents 31 logging and wood manufacturing companies with approximately 4,500 unionized employees operating on the British Columbia coast.

Note from OS: 66 workers died and 100's were injured on the job working on FIR sites last year alone!
