Tell CleanPower to Allow its Janitors to Organize! Simple E action

http://www.unionvoice.org/campaign/madison_janitors

You can go to the link and just fill in the blanks.

Justice for Janitors!

Ask American Family Insurance to demand that CleanPower allow its janitors to organize! For far too long CleanPower, the largest commercial janitorial contractor in Wisconsin, has denied its employees decent wages, affordable health insurance, the democratic right to join a union. Across Southern Wisconsin janitors working for CleanPower have begun to organize with Service Employees International Union Local 1 and the Justice for Janitors campaign for dignified lives for them and their families. CleanPower has responded with an anti-union campaign of intimidation including threats of firing and deportation of its largely immigrant workforce.

Today, janitors, USAS, SEIU Local 1 members, and other community leaders are marching in Madison and Milwaukee to demand that CleanPower pay decent wages, provide affordable insurance, and allow janitors to exercise their democratic right to join a union. They are supported by Mayor Tom Barrett and Councilman Mike D’Amato of Milwaukee, and Mayor Dave Cieslewicz and Council President Austin King of Madison in calling for all building owners, tenants, and property managers to play a constructive and positive role in the janitors’ campaign.

Tell me more: http://www.unionvoice.org/campaign/madison_janitors/explanation

Dear < Decision Maker >,

(Edit Letter Below)

I am writing to you today regarding American Family Insurance's reluctance to play a positive role in the Justice for Janitors campaign, which aims to achieve dignified lives for janitors in Southern Wisconsin like those working for CleanPower that clean your buildings. While American Family Insurance is nationally recognized as a leader in the insurance industry, it has exercised no such leadership in solving the crisis of dead-end jobs with no health insurance in Wisconsin. Given its leverage in the market and its position as CleanPower's most important private client, AmFam's contracting decisions set the bar for the private cleaning industry.

It is my understanding that AmFam has refused to listen to CleanPower workers' stories or meet with their chosen representatives, the Service Employees International Union Local 1. AmFam has forbidden union organizers, immigration rights activists and students from informing CleanPower workers of their basic civil rights while on American Family property and threatened legal action against the individuals and institutions for their educational outreach efforts.

Today janitors, United Students Against Sweatshops, SEIU Local 1 members, and other community leaders are marching in Madison and Milwaukee to demand that Wisconsin janitors be paid decent wages, provided affordable insurance, and allowed to exercise their democratic right to join a union. They are supported by Mayor Tom Barrett and Councilman Mike D'Amato of Milwaukee, and Mayor Dave Cieslewicz and Council President Austin King of Madison in calling for all building owners, tenants and property managers to play a constructive and positive role in the janitors' campaign.

I call on AmFam to 1) Encourage CleanPower to respect its employees' right to organize a union, 2) Commit to using a responsible contractor, and 3) To become a leader among businesses through providing good jobs with healthcare.

These efforts will ultimately create a better Wisconsin for all. I look forward to AmFam's positive contribution to resolving this matter by supporting working families.

Sincerely,
