Tell Appalachian State To Respect Workers' Rights And Adopt the DSP! E action

http://www.unionvoice.org/campaign/appstate?rk=v1L0g7611lV2E

For the past two years, students at Appalachian State have been demanding that their university adopt the DSP. Despite the support of students, faculty, and the entire community, Chancellor Peacock has refused to even meet with students to discuss the issue. Call, fax, and email Chancellor Peacock today to demand that ASU join the 40 other schools who have already adopted the DSP!

Chancellor Peacock 828-262-3024

My name is _____ and I am a ______ at _______. I was very disappointed to learn that, despite the overwhelming support of the university community, you have still not adopted the DSP. ASU has an obligation to ensure that its clothes are not made in sweatshops, and I would urge you to adopt the DSP immediately!

Send a letter to the following decision maker(s):
Chancellor Kenneth Peacock
Chancellor Peacock

Below is the sample letter:

Subject: Adopt the DSP Today!

Dear ,

To date, 40 major universities have agreed, through their adoption of the Designated Suppliers Program (DSP), to take proactive steps towards ensuring that university licensed apparel is produced, not in sweatshops, but in factories in which the rights of workers are respected. These steps, as outlined in the DSP, include requiring university licensees to:

1. Source an increasing percentage of university licensed apparel from factories that not only produce a majority of their goods for the university market, but in which management has communicated an openness to unionization.
2. Pay enough per piece for these goods to ensure that workers have the opportunity to bargain for a living wage.
3. Delegate the monitoring of the program to an organization that is completely independent of the apparel industry, namely, the Worker Rights Consortium (WRC).

Judging by the decisions of your and your administration, ASU does not share the same commitment to workers' rights that has been so clearly exhibited by the 40 other universities that have committed to moving forward with such a project. I am aware of the fact that your attorney, Dayton Cole, has raised concerns over federal anti-trust law. However, students at ASU are merely asking for you to commit to the principles of the DSP and agree to adopt it only once it is proven by a Department of Justice Business Review letter to be legally sound. This conditional agreement fully protects ASU and your refusal to agree to it indicates that you are morally, rather than legally, averse to ending sweatshop labor conditions. Forty other schools have proven that this is a viable action to take and I am outraged that ASU has taken a stance in opposition to the DSP.

I find this lack of commitment on the part of ASU to be completely unacceptable, and demand that you commit to the adoption and timely implementation of the DSP. If the university is to truly stand for the ideals to which it claims to adhere, then it seems imperative that we do everything in our power to ensure that ASU's buying power is used to support the rights of workers, instead of actively condoning the systematic abuse of workers. With the adoption of the DSP, you have the opportunity to make ASU a proactive and valued, and I expect this university to make real its commitment and not allow such an opportunity to pass by.

Sincerely,

Your name.
