US transport workers call for backing during May action day

12 April 2007

Transport workers in the US are calling on employees around the world to unite in the common struggle against the onslaught on transport workers’ jobs.

Members of the ITF-affiliated International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) are urging other transport affiliates to back their action day next month.

The event on 17 May, which will be using the slogan “Enough is enough”, will involve a rally in Washington, DC, US; the union is aiming to see a turnout of 100,000 representatives from trade unions, community allies and progressive organisations.

A key message will be that workers are not a priority in the US and that transport workers have been under assault for years as a result of ineffective management and anti-worker laws. Job losses as employment is outsourced, cuts in pension benefits and under-investment in the transport system are among the issues workers have been facing.

1. Too bad they're not doing it May 1
which is a much more fitting day for labor action.

However, I wish them luck and I hope they just park their trucks wherever they are on May 17 and sit until May 18.

We need an opening salvo for the general strikes that are the only thing that will start getting through to conservatives in both parties.
