Rev. Otis Moss III will be taking over as Senior Pastor at Trinity United following Rev. Wright's retirement in May.

On 2/27/07 Rev. Moss spoke at DNC HQ as part of a black history event. I think he has a lot of interesting things to say. Watch it here: http://www.democrats.org/a/2007/02/reverand_otis_m.php

Rev. Moss received his BA in Religion and Philosophy from Morehouse College where he served as Student Government President. During his matriculation at "the House," he was inducted as a Ford Foundation Scholar, named by the NCAA as an All-American Track and Field athlete and graduated with honors.

He continued graduate work at Yale University and was awarded the FTE Benjamin Elijah Mays Scholarship in Religion and the Yale University Magee Fellowship. Rev. Moss is recorded as one of the few African-Americans to ever receive this award in the schools' 300-year history. Rev. Moss graduated from Yale with a Master of Divinity degree with a concentration in Ethics and Theology.

3. Thank you for posting that, Larry
While I appreciated Rev. Moss's remarks about Obama's long-time involvement with his congregation, I was even more inspired by his comments about the theology and goals of the church itself. I really did enjoy the video.

:)

6. No problem!
I posted it because I think Rev. Moss's world view and rhetoric is much more reflective of Obama's than Rev. Wright's. I'm actually an athiest but I like a lot of the things he has to say. His speech at the DNC reminded me of Cornel West and Michael Eric Dyson a little bit.

8. So is Jeremiah Wright
Wright then enrolled at Howard University where he received a bachelor's degree in 1968 and a Master’s degree in English in 1969. In 1975, Wright earned an additional Master’s degree from the University of Chicago Divinity School. He received a Doctor of Ministry Degree from United Theological Seminary in 1990 (where he studied under Samuel DeWitt Proctor). Wright also has seven honorary doctorate degrees. He has lectured at many seminaries and universities in the nation.

9. The Social gospel
Social Gospel, liberal movement within American Protestantism that attempted to apply biblical teachings to problems associated with industrialization. It took form during the latter half of the 19th cent. under the leadership of Washington Gladden and Walter Rauschenbusch, who feared the isolation of religion from the working class. They believed in social progress and the essential goodness of humanity. The views of the Social Gospel movement were given formal expression in 1908 when the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America adopted what was later called “the social creed of the churches.” Advocated in the creed were the abolition of child labor, better working conditions for women, one day off during the week, and the right of every worker to a living wage. With the rise of the organized labor movement in the early 20th cent. the Social Gospel movement lost much of its appeal as an independent force. However, many of its ideals were later embodied in the New Deal legislation of the 1930s.
