1. What gave me a flicker of hope, is that
(it was either in this clip or one with John Dean), the guest said that even though Bush has pretty much enacted measures that will give his admin a pass on war crimes, there IS other stuff we can go after them for.

We need to let all our reps know that if they don't DO something about this, we they will lose our vote (I honestly don't know how else to get their attention other than threatening them with that).

We also need to keep pressure on the Media.

And keep it BIG on the blogs. So much of what is covered and addressed these days is a result of enormous flaps in the blogs.

2. Pressure on the media? Other than KO, I have not heard ONE
m$m outlet mention this. Strange that; you'd think it would warrant a bit more attention.

3. Cafferty has become my new go to guy (in addition to Keith).
He may not have covered this (I don't have cable) but he doesn't seem to shy away from stuff like this.

4. Very few Americans want to hear this

and nobody in a position of responsibility wants to hear it. Because if they did confront this reality, the House Judiciary Committee would have to initiate impeachment and then the Congress would have to impeach and convict Bush and Cheney -- and after that, a new President would have to appoint a new Attorney General to prosecute the lot of these war criminals.

The first excuse our political and media leaders will give to the mirror is that they are afraid that the public will side with the war criminals on the question of whether "we" should torture "terrorists." Bush and his propaganda machine will tell another set of lies about all the millions of lives they saved by torturing these "high quality Al Qaeda intelligence sources." Rather than confront that very real problem in enforcing the rule of law, they all agree to let the clock run out on Bush.

A second rationale for inaction is harder to pin down -- the general fear of confronting Bush that has paralized our politics for almost seven years now. On the internet and here on DU, there is a lot of paranoid explanation for this lack of courage, including the imputation that our leaders all fear meeting the fate of Paul Wellstone. Personally, I don't know exactly what these people are afraid of, but the evidence of a profound fear that goes beyond legitimate politics seems to me to be overwhelming.

For us watching this charade of government go on, we too are afraid to face what all this really means. It is so much more convenient for us to fret over when to quit a church or how much leeway to give a candidate for stretching her resume -- or, most absurdly yet, whether Pennsylvanians are bitter.

It makes me sick.

5. This is not leadership.
Rather than confront that very real problem in enforcing the rule of law, they all agree to let the clock run out on Bush. I'm tired of these people collecting my money via taxes and doing nothing to earn it.

6. Innocent men and women have been tortured
Not that I condone torture, but I find it specially repulsive that men and women who are not even granted the right to a lawyer have been waterboarded based on mere suspicion. That is outrageous and Cheney and Bush should be impeached for it.

10. There was an opportunity for reform 30 years ago-nothing happened and the BFEE is a direct result

of unaccountability. In the wake of Watergate and after the death of John Edgar Hoover the Senate had investigations and calls for oversight and reform of the intelligence community known as The Church Committee.

The House also had parallel investigations that went deeper-in fact, the final House Report is still unavailable. This House investigation Committee's report has been lost for 30 years-yet much was known then about war crimes and torture and other topics--perhaps that's why the Final Report is still unavailable

"The Pike Committee" (archived thread started 3-11-2008)
