Tom Waits - "God's Away On Business"

I'd sell your heart to the junkman baby
For a buck, for a buck
If you're looking for someone
to pull you out of that ditch
You're out of luck, you're out of luck

The ship is sinking
The ship is sinking
The ship is sinking
There's leak, there's a leak,
in the boiler room
The poor, the lame, the blind
Who ore the ones that we kept in charge
Killers, thieves, and lawyers

God's Away, God's away
God's away on Business. Business. God's Away,
God's Away God's Away on Business. Business.

Digging up the dead with
a shovel and a pick
It's a job, it's a job
Bloody moon rising with
a plague and a flood
Join the mob, join the mob
It's all over. It's all over, It's all over
There's a leak, there's a leak,
in the boiler room
The poor, the lame, the blind
Who are the ones that we kept in charge?
Killers, thieves, and lawyers
God's away. God's away, God's away
On Business. Business.
God's away, God's away. God's away
On Business.

Instrumental Break

Goddamn there's always such
a big temptation
To be good, To be good
There's always free cheddar in
a mousetrap, baby
It's a deal, it's a deal
God's away, God's away, God's away
On Business. Business.
I narrow my eyes like a coin slot baby,
Let her ring, let her ring
God's Away, God's Away
God's Away on Business.
Business..........

3. Glad you enjoyed. Some would say Waits is an acquired taste. I would agree.
But i absolutely adore him and had the great privilege of seeing him in Atlanta in August. He performed this song ten feet from me and i was...well...*shivering* to say the least.

This song, in particular, seems to match my mood regarding the state of things political, from time to time.

Cheers!

5. I've never heard him before.
Naturally I thought of our present situation as well, when listening to it.

6. A great artist.
I never saw him live -- but would love to. Saw him perform a couple months ago on "The Daily Show"

7. Saw him very early in his career at a joint in Chicago

Came on stage with a suitcase covered in traveler's stickers. Lit up and went to town.
"Step right up..."

I'd never seen or heard a creature like him in my life and was completely in awe.
Great body of work...classic.

But haven't really kept up with him lately nor heard this song, so thanks for posting it!

9. Frickin' BRILLIANT
This is right out of Berlin, 1931 - which is what this country is increasingly feeling like.

Thank God for Tom Waits.

12. The Master...
Thank you for posting this, I hadn't heard anything from the new album yet.

My favorite, "The Heart of Saturday night", and the live one "Big Time".
